Buddy of mine plays doom3 with the details maxed out at 1024x768. I noticed it get notchy every now and then and he blames the hard drives saying its hitting the hard drive becuase he doesnt have enough memory.. he has 512megs and also has no idea what any of his bios settings are at. I have picked up 600 points in 3dmark by just playing with the bios settings. He says if he turns the details down it goes away.. is it really because he doesnt have enough system memory and its tasking his hard drive thats causing the nothc in his game? He does have a 40 gig IDE drive. ALso this is the 256bit version not the atlantis.. and he is running the latest ATI drivers.

'The hell is notchy? skipping?

Could possibly be a mem issue, try turning down some graphic settings and alt tab (can you do this in doom 3?) and check your memory usage.

I play Doom 3 just fine at those settings with a 9800 pro converted to 9800XT. No lagging or jerking. I also have 512mb of system ram. I'd suggest he stop all running background processes and non essential services to free up as much memory as possible.

its like when he goes into a room or some characters come out of places it will kinda notch.. also... how did you mod your 9800 into an XT?

The card just isn't good enough to play Doom 3 maxed out without choppiness and only 512mb of Ram. I have a similiar system and tried my hardest when it was the game to get to run better for a totally smooth experience I played Doom 3 at 1024 with medium settings. Turn it up to high and it was fine standing in a room looking around but you get in a big fire fight and the jerkiness comes. I tried all the ini tweaks and everything. Same deal with HL2. Very playable with high textures and models, actually more so than doom 3 at high, but for a totally smooth no jerk experience I leave it on medium.

JFYI: Atlantis doesn't mean 128 bit. I have a oem Sapphire from newegg that is 256 bit and the box says Radeon 9800pro Atlantis.
