Question to you OC experts. About a month ago I built a new system consisting of:
Asus Rampage II Gene
Core i7 920
Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D DDR3-1600 memory (3 x 2GB)
XFX Radeon 5850
Corsair HX520 PSU
Two optical drives and two Seagate HDD
Windows 7 64-bit
It was NOT my plan to OC this system. The goal was to leave the CPU at stock and run the RAM at its rated speed of 1600 (I now know that in itself is overclocking). The system worked fine at default clocks for RAM and CPU but as soon as I set the RAM to 1600 I started getting hard locks. Sometimes during bootup, sometimes shortly after. The system was very unstable.
I have literally tried every suggestion from every forum and website I could find, including Corsair, but no matter what I get no stability whatsoever with RAM above 1066. Things I've tried:
1) Replace RAM with new kit (same type)
2) Replace PSU with 850W model
3) Adjusted nearly every timing value including Back to Back delay
4) Adjusted QPI and DRAM voltage even up to 1.8 vdimm, which is way above spec
5) Adjusted various BIOS settings, including turbo, HT, spread spectrum, etc
None of these changes have worked. The only one that gave slightly more stability was 1.8 vdimm but that just extended the time before hard lock.
Interestingly, the RAM has completed numerous full passes of memtest v4 while running at 1600 8-8-8-24 1.35 QPI / 1.65 vdimm with no errors at all. It's only during 'real' system use that the hard locks occur. This makes me think the RAM itself is fine and that the issue may be with the mobo or CPU memory controller.
I don't know what to do at this point. Did I just get unlucky with CPU or mobo? As of now, I'm running the RAM at 1066 5-5-5-18 1T. Those are good timings for DDR3 but still I'd prefer to run at 1600 since I paid so much for this memory.
