Not sure if I should upgrade

Hi

As of late, I've been having a lot of trouble running many games(TF2 amongst others) on low or very low settings. I'm averaging around 20 - 25 FPS on a 1680 by 1050 resolution. Ideally my video card should be able to handle medium to high settings on that resolution but it's not. So I'm thinking that my CPU is holding back my gfx card.

I was wondering If i would see any gains by bumping my CPU to 3.8 ghz +. If not should i experiment with SLI or upgrade my cpu/motherboard/ ram seeing that the LGA 1366 socket is getting phased out for LGA 1155.

Computer Specs
Core i7 920 overclocked @ 3.1 ghz
EVGA gtx 570
G.Skill 6 GB (3 x 2GB) DD3 1600
850 W Corsair PSU

I ran 3d Mark Vantage and got a score of 6700.

Thanks in advance.

I think there's something else wrong with the computer if you're running that slow at that resolution. I have a 920 on my gaming computer and the thing has no trouble keeping me above 60fps in games.

I think you should first experiment with a format, or even a second windows installation just to see how that runs.

I agree with Pylor: Overclock the processor if you can and reformat your system if you must.

What are you using for storage (HDD/SSD)?

Reformat. There's no way your rig should be running TF2 at 25fps

Something is wrong with the system, probably software related unless one of the components are overheating.

That hard drive is pretty garbage for a main drive, no offense. I picked one up cheap from best buy (500gb version) and threw it in a computer I was trying to restore after half cannibalizing it. I have a 2TB one that I use for storage and it's just fine for that, but as a main drive it was horrible. Thing would have trouble running windows, freezing for 5 seconds at a time. Still, it's an e6850 (core 2 duo) with an 8800gtx in it and I think it would still run games better than your computer is atm

EDIT: My bad, was too sleepy last night to remember the OP while reading replies.

Sounds like a driver issue.

A slow HDD shouldn't effect FPS in games. Once the game is loaded, the HDD generally doesn't do anything.

If your system's FPS is being held back, it is clearly not your OS drive that's to blame. Instead, check the temperatures of both your system's CPU and GPU, and clean out all the dust from the insides of your PC. Your system's GPU and/or CPU might be overheating. If all else fails, you may need a new (better) CPU cooler (if you're still using the stock Intel cooler) or a better quality, roomier case with better airflow (if you're stuck with an old or cheap case with overly small fans, especially the intake fans, and relatively poor airflow).

Yes, it wouldn't lead to low FPS, I agree with that, I probably should have used better wording in my post. It's just really slow and if he has stutters that might be why, but as he didn't mentioned stutters I doubt that's his problem.

It was more just a passing commentary on how he could improve his general computing experience. My money is still on software problems. Or maybe overheating, but most overheating has other side effects unless the throttling down on the system is working amazingly.

so i got the CM H 212 evo as an aftermarket heatsink. Since i had to dissemble everything and put it back together.I tried to boot up however I no longer get a signal to the display. My computer boots up fine from the sound of it. I tried to clear cmos and still no luck.

running a corsair 650W it was working prior to installing the hsf.

Does your motherboard beep at all when it starts up? I know some of them do, my current one does. Do the hard drive lights come on as though it's actually booting up?

I'd check that the ram is in the right slot (atleast mine is EXTREMELY picky, if your ram isn't in the right slots it won't boot), and that all the power connectors are properly put in. Usually if it's a video card cable not plugged in it'll make a noise like you've just broken into a bank, but I'd check them all anyways.Did you actually take the CPU out?

Also make sure that the motherboard isn't touching the case at all on the back, I've had motherboards ground themselves out before, though usually it just doesn't have power lights period.

I dont notice much a difference in terms of beeps. I can't seem to locate the LED lights indicating whether or not my HDD is up.

I didn't move the ram out of it position. It still in the same slots(A1,B1,C1). I'm pretty sure my gfx card is plugged in as I don't hear bank being broken into. I did take out the CPU. i Took out the motherboard again replugged everything back into where it hould belong and i still have the same issue.

I'm not to sure about the motherboard touching the motherboard tray. If anything the backplate of the cooler master H212 EVo may be touching the motherboard tray.

You can try running it outside of the case. Check out the troubleshooting sticky, the steps for a barebone bench test, and report results.

alright ill give that a try.

one more thing is that the motherboard Asus P6T is displaying a red power switch as a opposed to green.
