Yep.

Going from a GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB, to a...

6200
6600GT
9800Pro

Will want to do HD in the future. Which is the best bang for the buck?
 
yeah thats clear...........6600GT is the one which you would go for as its the fastest and latest amongst all the cards listed

That's what I figured. I certainly knew it was the fastest, just didn't quite know if it was the best bang for the buck. It is about twice the price of a 6200, and about $25 or so more than the 9800pro.

I just need something to get by on until I migrate my wife over to my machine, and get me an X2. Then it will be the video card in the HTPC. That is why HD is a big factor. I thought that the 6600GT had the HD accelleration working as opposed to my vanilla 6800, and that is why I was leaning towards it in the first place.

Now, is eVGA a good brand? They have the least expensive card on newegg that has the HDTV out. Anyone know of any other good deals on the 6600GT series?

Looking at the refurbs on newegg, I found a vanilla 6800 for $25 more than the eVGA 6600GT. Better deal?

What am I saying... the 6800 don't have the accellerated HD like the 6600GTs right?

Still interested in knowing what you think though.

Stay far far away from the 6800 vanillas. Either get a 6800GT or stick wtih 6600GT.
 
I like my vanilla 6800. I upgraded to it from the same Ti4200 that my wife has now though. Anything would have made my gaming experience better than that 4200. :)

So is the 6600GT going to be faster than my vanilla 6800?

Now you have me thinking whether or not to give the 6600GT to her, or give her my 6800 and keep the 6600GT for myself. :eek:

Nope.... the 6800 vanilla is a ramped down version of the 6800GT / ultra. It's got 12 pipelines, slower clocked core, and slower ddr1, vs 16 pipelines and ddr3 on the GT and ultra versions. Some of the normal 6800's can have their 4 extra pipes "unlocked" (enabling the use of all 16 pipelines) and be overclocked to almost rival the GT speeds, but that's a gamble if you'll get one which will "go the distance". :)

Yes, HD output is the same between them. The performace in many games is about on par between the two unless you run high resolutions with AA/AF on, then the 6800 will trump the 6600GT. Here's an AnandTech article with a whole slew of tests.

whoops... I need glasses... I saw 6800 and 6800GT, not 6600GT. lol
 
I would keep the 6800, it's slightly faster than the 6600GT at stock (lots when you put AA on), it overclocks very well, and there is always the chance of unlocking the pipelines.

If you like a lot of eye candy turned on, then the 6800 gets my vote. As newer games come out, they will look absolutely stunning at higher resolutions with things like AA/AF/SM3.0 turned on. I have a 6600GT (hopefully a 2nd soon for SLI), but a pair of 6800's or 6800GT's would be sweet for me mainly for the extra pipelines over the 6600GT.

I would keep the 6800... it's got the potential to unlock the pipes, and OC, even if it doesn't work out for unlocking, I think they perform a little better than the 6600GT at higher resolutions with AA and AF on.
 
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but all PCIe 6800 series have HD decoding, but the AGP 6800 HD decoding is broken. 6600 series hd decoding works on either one.

AGP-native 6800's WMV accelaration is broken. PCI-E 6800GT and Ultra's WMV accelaration's also broken as they are basically the same chip as their AGP counterpart.

All 6600's and the vanilla PCI-E 6800, which is native PCI-E, have fully working decoders.

I have one of those vanilla PNY 6800s that were on newegg for cheap as hell at one point, got it for like 160 with shipping. It is fully unlocked 16 pipes 6 shaders and it's running at 400 // 824 fully stable, max temp reaches about 53 degress C, and no artifacts :) . Stock fan is quiet to me, most people said it was loud for them. Oh and my case wiring sucks, the airflow has to be bad as hell in my case...

The only thing that's broken is WMV accelaration. DVD hardware accelarated decoding is not broken. BTW, the AGP 6600GT has a fully-working decoder.

I ended up ordering the eVGA 6600GT today from newegg. $144 after $15 rebate. My wife is exited!

Well, got it in today. I had to go to work, but I had 20 minutes to install it before I had to leave. Got it in there, and started up the Sims 2. First thing I did is to turn everything to high and the smoothness to max. Plays great. My wife loves it. Says that it is at least 10x better than the Ti4200 that was in there. She said that she could now read what was written on her Sims' T-Shirt. How cool. Just thought I would let you guys know that she loves it. :)

Not PCI-E. Only AGP 6800NUs can unlock. Since you are getting the "$144 b/c of $15 MIR" deal, I assume that's the PCI-E 6600GT (since I've seen that deal a lot, and I know it's on the PCI-E version)? In that case, you made the wise choice.
