The picture is becoming clear as mud now. It sort of now looks like the NV40 will be 8 pipes DX7/8 with another 8 pipes of DX9 that can be run together in certain situations (IE a game that runs DX7/8 as a base but also has DX9 extensions) So technically it would sort of look like 8 & 8 (which can either be 8x2 or 16x1 depending on situation)

In comparison the Radeon 9800 is 8 DX7/8 pipes with 4 *very* fast DX9 vertex pipes so 8 & 4, but not able to run together (at least I don't think so)

The R420 is rumored to be 8 DX7/8 with 6 DX9 pipes so 8 & 6, or possibly even 10 & 6 or 12 & 6

It makes more sense to me to use the & than the x.

All pure speculation.

specualting is fun isnt it  but i guess we'll know soon enough.

when the review is up on [H] we'll see the truth :)

mmmmm thats some tasty speculation.

pass the facts please.

all this stuff i keep reading from all these forums over the pipe configurations make me laugh

in the grand scheme of things none of it really matters

Well, if videocard makers were a little more open about the specs then we wouldn't have to speculate. Then again, it wouldn't be half as gossipy either.

Admitedly, I'm more concerned about Image quality and less with raw speed on each generation (But I do want 1600x1200x32 at 60+fps)

Still waiting for videochips to have really nice laid out PDF's like Intel and AMD that show thermal specs, cache sizes, pinouts, etc... I guess its never going to happen. Both ATI and Nvidia are very tight-lipped about technology in that respect.

Really? I heard that it will be have a 5mhz core but 16 billion pipelines.

they'll never be completely open about the core technology because of competition, its just like any business, you don't want the competition copying or building upon what you've created, you don't want your secrets of the technology out there

in the grand scheme of things the pipeline configuration is meaningless when it comes to the actual game performance a card delivers, there are so many other variables, yeah its important, but its not the end all be all factor of a video cards performance

If we all only had access to the original that was in the game console on that UFO in Roswell....

damn shame they keep that a secret...:p

Well the fact we're had so many leaks about how the Nv40 will be 16 pipes that tells me that Nvidia is trying to push this mentality. Well once bitten by the Nv30 I would imagine people are more skeptical of Nvidia this go around. I would think performance in games will be the decider for most people. Kind of like the 'bit' wars in consoles got out of hand lets hope 'pipe' speculation takes a back seat to pure price/performance with non-cheating drivers.

Uttar said, with what seemed like 100% certainty, that NV40 is a true 16x1 part. No VS bastardizations needed to get 16 pipes.

Of course, take everything with a grain of salt, however uttar is someone who's definitely "in the know".

Well, 16x1 is important to some people as it will give excellent fillrate numbers.

Mind you... The parehlia has excellent fillrate numbers too.

Since Nvidia has set a date April 14th for more info, its time to wait and see.

YES! What good is hardware if you can't overclock it??

I ask my friend this all the time. He also has a 3.0c but always buys the Intel motherboards. It's a damn shame...:(
