norton systemworks 2004

my dad just bought norton systemworks 2004. when he tries to install it on his computer he gets the illegal operation error and it doesn't proceed.(his computer already has norton systemworks 2002). so we tried to install it on my computer, no problem(mine does not use norton systemworks previously). any insight to why it will not install on his computer?

Uninstall the older version first.

dang, you just beat me to it...i was going to make an update and say that when he tried to uninstall 2002 it wouldnt let him.

try safe mode or boot to the recovery console and try there

Run the SymClean tool.

ok, so i have gotten a little further, i used symclean so the 2002 is off his computer. the install will now commence, however when i get to a certain point- 'Microsoft Shared Library Installer'

it gives me an error like this:

Are all other programs shut down?
Is the drive defragmented?

i'll check about the defrag, its his computer so i dont know how often he does it

There are some things in the Control Set, if I remember correctly, that can interfere with the install. Virtual device drivers get conflicts, etc. Maybe Symantec's site will have some info. Back when I used Symantec, they had good support for problems like this one. The forum techs over there were pretty good. The site can be difficult to navigate, however, if it is like it used to be. It is worth a shot at this point.
