sorry if this is in the wrong forum :)

i've bought norton ghost and i'm struggling to use it...

basically it works like this...

1) My laptop is getting repaired tomorrow (hardware fault) and i want to copy the entire drive (35gb used out of 100gb)

2) I have norton ghost, and a 80gb usb HD (currently filled with 35gb of data I really need)

how do I go about making a backup without losing anything so when my laptop is repaired I can copy the data back over...

the main menu isn't very helpful....

You should just be able to image the drive and then reload the image back on when you get it back. I use acronis and it has an option to image a drive and create a startup bootdisk that lets you load the image. Look for something similiar.

is there not any programs out there that copy everything including boot files to some sort of image which can be saved on another storage medium...

can't believe its this simple :-(

EDIT - I'd like access to these files on another PC if its plugging into another computer....

I would create a folder called "Ghost" on the drive, and put the image in there. It'll be in a compressed format that only Ghost can open, so you'll have to restore the image when you are ready to get your stuff.

This is really the only way to do what you want while keeping the data on the USB HDD.

Ghost should have come with two discs. Ghost 10, and Ghost 2003. Ghost 10 is a data backup utility. Ghost 2003 is a disk cloning utility. Install 2003, and create a Ghost boot disk (you've got a floppy disk, right? :p). Boot to the disk, and from there you can clone and image all day long.

floppy disk???? wot are they haha - laptop, don't have one..hehe

think i've sorted it now....no way of really checking as i can't be bothered getting the comp to boot to the usb...to much hassle....

I use Acronis to do an image of my C drive. With Acronis you make a boot disk, and if your drive dies you use the boot disk to boot from and use it to restore your drive to a new hard drive.

It is very easy, you just click on "Backup" then select your drive you want to back up (or individual files if it's not a full back up) and then select the folder on the drive you want to make the image to.

You can keep other files on the disk you make the image to. It's not like cloaning, to me cloaning is ideal for when you get a new hard drive and want to copy your old drive over to the new drive. Back up is for when you want to back up your drive in case it fails and have the option to restore it.

Try the free trial of Acronis and get a feel for it.
