Northwood or Presscot?

i'd go prescott, but i've used both. i doubt you could tell the difference but depends on what you use it for.
 
If you don't want hyper-threading, your only option is the slower Northwoods; all the Prescotts have HT last I checked, as do the faster Northwoods. I *think* the fastest non-HT Intel processor is 2.8 GHz, from 3.06 on they are all HT IIRC.
 
You can use an HT proc with a non-HT mobo as long as it is supported, it will just run like a normal single-core. If you have the Pundit-R it supports up to 3.2GHz and 800MHz FSB so no problems there. Get the Northwood 3.0C, I've had one running 24/7 for 2 years now and never had to reboot exept when changing parts and cleaning the interior. Heat dissipation is also lower than for the Prescott.
 
Buy the northie. It should be supported and will run MUCH cooler.

You would get 1mb (1024kb) cache memory on the prescott compared to 512kb on the northwood...

Plus Prescott is newer technology, and its 90nm...

And if u have a nice air flow in ur case... u wouldnt even have to worry about the heat!

Northwood is faster than prescott on socket 478. It is cooler. You have to Oc past 3.6? before that larger cache and extra instructions give ANY kind of speed increase if any.

From my own experience of running both a northwood and a prescott, if you don't plan to overclock, go with northwood. If you do, go with a presscott. Northwoods will generally go to about 3.6 on air, while prescotts will do 3.8. Of course, prescotts generate quite a bit more heat, so you would need some good case airflow and a decent copper heatsink.
Then there's a consideration of changing the motherboard. Hyperthreading is very nice. I didn't realize that until I went amd. My old pressy @ 3.8 was fast, but this new 3800+ venice @ 2.8GHz is quite a bit faster. However, even with a faster AMD processor, I miss the hyperthreading: gone are the days when I would be downloading 2-3 files in background while playing an online fps game with zero stuttering from the downloads.
 
Well u see those things were based on the older steppings...
The newer stepping "E0" runs much cooler...

Guys dont forget the 1mb cache does effect performance quite abit!

The prescott has a longer pipeline, they added more cache to try and offset the performance difference.


I personally recommend a Northwood, Socket 478 prescotts run hot as hell.
 
It really depends upon what motherboard he wants to run it on. If the board does not support a Prescott, then his only option is to get the Northwood.

I have a prescott 3gig OCed to 3.6 and I was having trouble with heat. That was until I bought the (I think this is right) thermalright xp-90. Awsome heat sink very good. I never reach temps above 45c. And I play half-life 2, bat field 2, and all the other new ones.
