Northbridge nearing death?

Lately, my Northbridge HSF on my Abit IC-7 board has been going berserk in terms of RPM's and noise. I can't even run WinBond because it constantly skyrockets past the set ceiling limit.

I'm thinking that the unit might be heading for a quick death. Anyone else think the same? I've never had a HSF go south on me, so I can't be certain.

Is this the older version with the green fan on top of a silvery heatsink?

If so, I was having the same problem. The fan was failing and making a lot of noise. I took it off and oiled it. That seems to have helped for now. There was a thread in Intel forum about putting a different heatsink on there that wouldn't need a fan. I had tried that, but I was getting some instability, so I might have done it wrong.

No, I definitely have the newer revision board with the tall heatsink with an indented HSF.

Just checked, it's the revision 1.1

If it's still under warranty contact Abit to have the board replaced.

You could buy a replacement fan and heatsink, I did that for my board when my northbridge fan started to die. Works fine now.
