Normal Temps for CPU and GPU.

Was wondering what a normal temp would be for these components?. And whats an overclockers goal for the temps to be at?. Thanks.
 
It all depends on the type of cpu & gpu, the voltages they operate under, whether they at idle or load as well as the type of cooling used. As Korben Dallas said, you are not giving us much info here. You have to be more specific.
 
Sorry bout that guys, still learning here. But I have a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor and a SAPPHIRE 100311SR Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity. I do alot of gaming along with extreme multi tasking in programs such as video editing and sound mixing (Sonar 8, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, and Sony Vegas). I guess I need this info to prevent any damages happening to my rig. I have about ten fans in my case running without a temp reader which I will install, also was just curious about over clockers goals in temps. But I guess it all depends on what they want to use the system for. Need to experience it for myself to know, It will all come together for me. ANyway hope that gives you guys a better Idea. Oh and would lowering the temp boost performance?.
 
Not more than 65C for the CPU. The 6970 should be around 90C or so on load if it's completely stock, it shouldn't go to 100C or higher. As for multitasking, that has no effect on GPU temperatures, but it may increase CPU load a bit. Cooling things down won't increase performance, but it will increase overclocking headroom; it's generally a good idea to get a 3rd party heatsink for at least the CPU anyway.
 
Yes Mr. Pendantic, the CPU stock heatsink didn't get me, so I went and got a COOLER MASTER Hyper N 520 RR-920-N520-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler Intel Core i7 compatible on craigslist for $15.00. I figured with the GPU and CPU I would need a good cooling system going, Would liquid cooling keep my worries low here? or can I work with what I have, I dont plan on overclocking my rig but I would like to try when I'm ready specifically for gaming. And I think I would need to get a temp reading to get an Idea right?.
 
You can liquid cool if you want, though if you're looking for something in the $15 range, it's non-existent AFAIK. All-in-one CPU cooling systems (with radiator, tubing, fan, pump, block, etc) like the Corsair H50/H70 are roughly comparable to high-end heatsinks, and are priced similarly. 'Proper' watercooling systems, with discrete components, will cost much more, though the temperatures they will give are unparalleled with air cooling. However, especially for a beginner I'd guess it's a hassle to set up and most likely not worth it. I would just stick with the Hyper N520 for now.
 
I c, Yeah I think so too. Need to plan out a workstation to work with overclocking. But im happy with my first successful build.
 
Keep CPUs under 60 but their max temps are usually 90 to 100 C. I would only see those temps at stress testing though.

Can't agree with this. Phenom II's max recommended temp is 62c although I have seen people run it a few degrees hotter. 90-100c is really hot even for GPU's, and I'm pretty sure almost every CPU out today will shut off before it hits 90c...
 
Agreed. I'm not comfortable running my CPU at over 80C, and mine is an Intel. Phenom IIs are worse, I'd keep one under 60C if possible. GPUs can take a bit more, and especially today's high-end cards run at really high temps, but lowering them isn't a bad thing.
 
Guys I really appreciate the advice and opinions on this, it helps me out loads. Where would i go website wise to find various types of temp readers for the gpu and cpu?

Are you asking about temp reporting software? If so your mobo should have some kind of software package that includes temp monitoring. For AMD cpu you could also use Core Temp . AIDA64 (formely Everest) also has temp monitoring for a wide range of components but you have to pay for a license for that 1. For GPU you can the CCC or the abovementioned AIDA64 which provides temp readings of the gfx card components or RivaTuner or ATI Tray Tools.

Just keep in mind that no software temp reporting program is 100% accurate, these are all approx readings.
 
I always get mixed signals about CPU temps. Some people swear they should never go over the 60's C, but others have said anything under 80's fine.
I've got an i7 920 at 4Ghz (sans turbo) and idle in the 30's and never go over 75.
On mine I can run Prime 95 and Intel Burn Test (100% load) all day sans any errors or issues and see temps as high as 75...but usually floating in the high 60's.
Honestly, as long as I'm not having any issues, does it matter? It's certainly not like (m)any apps or games push like stress tests do.
