Hey guys!

I have a somewhat interesting issue for us :)
(Imho ofcourse hahaha)

I use a Norco 4224 as a JBOD case. There is only a HP SAS Expander (on a really small board with a pcie slot which only needs power) so no cpu or other heat source. I have 16 discs in the case.

In the back are 2x80mm Noctua fans how pull the air OUT.

In the middle i have got 3x120mm. (simple ones)
Now is the problem that the discs are getting a bit too warm.

Where i need help is this:

Because of the small air holes in front of the disc brackets i am thinking about static pressure fans (the Noctua industral 3000 serie). And i am a bit not sure about the direction of the air.

I could turn the 3x120mm around so that the air will blow over the discs instead of pulling the air. The distance for the air to get out is much shorter then... right? ( and yes i would have to turn the 2x80mm around)

But.... Noctua has recently released a killer 120mm fan. The NF-A12x25. Which has got crazy specs same say it is even a better static pressure fan than the older industral ones.....

So two questions:

- Which fans (Industral 3000 serie or NF-A12x25)?
- Which direction is best to cool the discs down?

Pricewise the fans are more or less the same plus the result is more important than saving a few bucks.

Help is much appreciated :)

I would try reversing your fans first. Then buy which ever of the two have the best specs and warranty. Btw 3000rpm is pretty friggin loud!
 
So even though I ended up going a different direction I did alot of research on the 4u supermicro and norcos and silencing them, the biggest thing for keeping the drives cool is the static pressure.
First question, are you blocking the holes with no drives in them? If not path of least resistance might have air flowing too much through those empty bays (put some tape or fill those holes so the air doesn't go through those slots)
Second before you reverse the fan direction I'd try to block up all of the fan wall leakage with some packing foam or weatherstripping, whatever you like to make sure the seal is good on the middle wall (no air pulling from the cable holes, it all comes from the drive slots etc).

Lastly, the fans I've seen recommended I had never heard of, but they have a great static pressure, fantastic MTBF, and the noise they make basically silent.

There are several other speeds/types of fans they make most of them would work fairly well.
The CF-V12HP is the PWM version and is a little louder/higher rpm, if you're looking for controllable (and has a ridiculous 2.2mm static pressure to 17.9db ratio) ~ I'm unsure on this one though, my research all reference the HDB version above.

Both of these cost about 1/2 of the noctua.
