I am getting a Gigabyte GA-EP45_UD3R mobo with a max front side buss of 1333mhz.
I am getting either the E8400 or E7400 core duo cpu.
I want 4gb(2x2gb) of dual channel DDR-2 memory

Could you suggest what speed memory I should get so I can overclock with this setup?

If you can suggest some specific memory with a link that would be awesome.....

What is with all the negative egg reviews on it? I am also considering this ram(with the same motherboard as OP). Did you have to do anything special to get it working?

Nope, dropped it in, gave it 2.0 volts, and ran it at 500-5-5-15.

For the E8400, I'd recommend getting something DDR-1000 or higher, since you can probably exceed 400 FSB with that chip. I have 2 sets of this G.Skill and it works great.

I plan to do the same build, but with E7400, maybe a Noctua cooler.

With the 10.5 multiplier, even 4.0 Ghz is like 380 FSB right, 4.5 GHz like 428 FSB? Can I get by with DDR2 800 like the G.Skill above?

Any other good options, like OCZ or Corsair? Any benefit to faster ram with the E7400?

What's the benefit (if any) of lower voltage RAM?

The G.Skill is 1.8V, while say OCZ mostly seems to be 2.1V.

Lower voltage benefits:
1. Runs cooler
2. Less risk of over-volting
3. Greater theoretical overclock

If one kit runs at 800mhz 2.1v while the other does 800mhz at 1.8, then the 1.8v can be bumped up to about 2.1 to (possibly, not always a guarantee) get a high speed.

Thanks - so that $40 G.Skill kit is looking like a no brainer for an E7400?

For the E7400 with a 10.5 multiplier (I didn't realize it was so high), the DDR2-800 would be more than enough. At that speed I don't think manufacturer makes a whole lot of difference - just get whatever is cheapest (at a decent CAS) from a quality manufacturer - OCZ, Corsair, G.Skill - they are all good. Check for rebates though, if you don't mind them, some 1066 is cheaper than 800 with rebate (like that Corsair kit linked above).

Go for that $40 G.Skill DDR2 800 kit. Great kit and overclocks well.

Why would you go for the GSkill DDR2-800 for $40 when you can get the faster Corsair DDR2-1066 for $37....am I missing something here?? Doesn't make sense to me if you want to overclock.

g.skill ddr21066 pc8500 or g.skill pc6400 both worked great on my ud3p

Q9450 @ 4.0ghz with the pc8500

No reason really - but I think a lot of those 1066 sticks are just 800 sticks clocked higher at the factory, so you might not get any more overclocking out of them.

Was thinking of this OCZ too, for $20 after rebate, though now out of stock.

How much difference do the timings make in real world speed? Most DDR2 memory has slightly different but very similar timings at a particular rated speed. All things being equal it seems the best memory is the cheapest with the rated speed you desire.

1066 sticks are just 800's with better chips that "Tend" to OC higher then the 800 sticks.

I went with the G.Skill 1066 that was the Newegg Valentine's deal for $50. Should run at 800 at 4-4-4-12, but I have the 1066 in case I need it later.

I have the Corsair 2x2GB 1066 set and they work perfect. I've also ran different setups using G.Skill memory and not once have they disappointed me.

You can't go wrong with either.

Not that much of a diff, but should not be ignored in the meaning of going with 7-7-7-18 vs 5-5-5-15 for example.

The ram i decided to go with were the PI blacks rated @ 4-4-4-12 @ 800, I got em running at 955 @ 5-5-4-12 @ 2.08V, Highest i have ran em was 1120 @ 2.16V. I love em.

Was about to get the Pi blacks but Newegg raised the price!

I've seen benchmarks showing 4-4-4-12 at 800 as fast as 5-5-5-15 at 1066, that kind of difference.

Whats the price now? If i recall i got mine for like $45 or $49 dont remember. They were brand new since they only had a few reviews, they had the 1066 version for almost $20 more if i recall as well. Give these puppys 2.0+ and they scream.

One thing that i might get is a ram cooler, im wondering if the ocz will fit, if not im sure the corsair one will, since they get kinda warm to the touch at the speeds im running them at 24/7.
