noob trying to install CPU

Right, so I've fit the CPU into the mobo socket (triangle matching, slits matching), but I'm having issues lowering the lid down all the way, it just doesn't click into place. It's about 5 or so degrees above where it's supposed to be, and it seems that the only way to lower it completely is to put a vast amount of pressure on the chip which the MOBO manual does not specify or advise, and I don't want to take any chances.

Crank the lever down, the vast amount of pressure is necessary. That lid isn't going to lay flat when the lever isn't down. As long as the 2 sides of the cpu match up with the tabs in the socket you should be good to just lower the lever.

Exactly. You'll hear some disturbing noises but everything will be fine. All LGA775 motherboards and CPUs work this way. As long as your notches are lined up it will work fine.
 
I hate installing Intel CPU's, it scares me to push down hard on the lever. Cause it may cause mobo damage. Plus, on the back of mobos there are some small pricks(little needles), and pushing down so hard on the mobo could break some of those off.

And after all that, you have to install heatsink pins that literally bend your motherboard in half.
 
It takes quite a bit of pressure to get it in there, you should still probably make sure you're not about to break your mobo in half by pushing though.
 
I found out last time I had to install an intel stock HSF that a screwdriver works so much better than a thumb on those damn HS pins.

But yeah, crank the socket down, it takes a bit.
 
Yup make sure it locks in. Apply enough force, but not too much or you might crack the board or bend pins or smack a capacitor. Don't mean to scare you, lol.

One more question for you guys - I've got three SATAII ports on my MOBO labeled SATA1, SATA2, and SATA3 respectively with two channels each. I have 2HDDs I want to install, so which port(s) should I use to achieve maximum results?

i dont think it matters, but you should probably go in order (eg: 1,2,3) just to be a little more organized and know which drive is which.

id just go ahead and use sata 1 with both channels.

The SATA ports are all run off of the same controller, so it doesn't make a difference which ones you use.

The only problem that might occur is the boot drive selection on some MBs is odd. In BIOS you can select which device type or controller is first, but within that, the lowest-numbered active SATA port is the default boot drive. I once plugged a non-boot drive in SATA0 with the boot drive in SATA2 and the computer wouldn't boot - said it was a non-boot drive. Moved the SATA0 drive to SATA4 and everything worked fine. It didn't search through all the SATA drives until it hit one with proper boot code.

You should be able to manually pick the right boot drive in the BIOS though, if something like that did occur.
