Noob to SFF need help getting started

Not a Noob to building by any means, but SFF is new to me. Been at it over 15 years. Current system in my sig. I already have a HD and a CDROM leftover from previous builds.

I just came into a large inheritence and therefore can build another system. I have a Compaq notebook I'd like to give to my daughter and do a SFF as my second box.
I'd like to keep the cost < $1000. I like to use Newegg ;) as I'm sure most of you do. I don't care about AMD or Intel, i've done em' both and it does not matter.

When I'm not using the box to play games on, I'd like to use it as a game server (host) for UT04 or other games on the net. Other then that it would be a surfin machine. I don't care to OC this box.

Any suggestions appreciated as to a good fast system setup. Thanks !
