my monitor, an old compaq presario can get up to 1280x1024 res @ 60hz... but when I try to run cs or any other game above 1024x768 the game starts to go all sorta squiggly and I cant read or do anything to change it back except exit the game and change it through files...

I was just wondering, if my monitor can support 1280, why does all my games freak above 1024 ?

just kidding. it sounds like your monitor doesn't support the refresh rate at 1280 that it does in 1024 - CS is trying to run at say, 75hz, but at 1280 your monitor might only support 60hz, hence the squigglies.

change cs to run at 60hz while in 1024, THEN switch to 1280 and see what happens.
