ive got a pioneer a-717 amp..its pretty old..like 20 years i think...im not sure how many watts it is..i think 120..anyways..if i got newer speakers with a wattage over the amount the amp has will that be bad? :rolleyes:
 
You don't need the receiver to be able to break the speakers to have good sound ^_^.

I would be surprised if your receiver put out more then 40watts when at the volume you usually listen to audio with.

i have 2 20 YEAR OLD bose speakers...let me tell you somene did well somewhere...the sound is awesome and suprisingly crisp..the most ive ever cranked it to was about 1/3 of the way up...my room is 12x12 about...i kept getting up and opening my door to see if some1 was knocking on it but then i realized it was the bass :D :D :D
