Noob question on monitors

I want to get a monitor for my wife in the next few weeks. I am looking at something around 21.5" - 23" and price around $200 -$300 range. She does not game but does watch movies and browse the web. I am wondering which monitor is most appropriate? Would something like the Dell 2209WA IPS monitor having 5ms response be better than a TN system like Samsung's XL-2370-1 having a faster response time but sounds like not as good color imaging be better? Does one need the fastest response to minimize headaches watching the screen? Also, would something less expensive like the Asus VW224U be ok?

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance for your help.

The Dell 2209WA 22" would fit your needs and budget nicely. But, it doesn't look like your wife is that critical to where she needs an IPS display. A TN panel would be fine for her. As far as browsing the web, I would say a 22" as the text would be a good size to read vs a 23" with a 1920x1080 resolution. I have a 22", 24" and find the text on a 24" small to me.

By the way, you shouldn't have issues with the Dell 2209WA as far as watching movies is concerned. The big advantage also is that the Dell 2209WA has better view angles. The TN panels suffer alot if you have it well above eye level looking at it horizontally at an angle. But, if she is directly behind the monitor than the view angles is not much an issue.

The ASUS 22" that you mentioned should meet her needs. Most people out there would be fine with TN panels. Some who like better more accurate colors and wider viewing angles prefer a non TN panel lcd. I have TN panels myself and I'm ok with it. I know the colors are not as accurate as an IPS panel but, I'm no photoshop person myself. If I was, I would definitely get an IPS panel. I mainly play games, watch movies and browse the web also.

Thanks HardwareGuru, your reply is much appreciated. I think I have narrowed it down to the two monitors you mention (Dell or Asus) with one possible addition being the HP ZR22W. I am not sure if the HP would be that much cheaper than the Dell since Dell has free shipping on the monitor. I also like the fact that Dell has a bit of history so that I know that any bugs on the monitor were already corrected.

So now, I will leave it up to her whether she wants to save family money and get the cheaper Asus monitor or spend the extra bucks to get the Dell. Since we don't buy monitors too often (we still use 12 year old CRTs on some of the family PCs), it may be better to spend the extra to get something decent.

Thanks again! :D

Well..all I can say is if your wife decided to get the Dell, it won't be a mistake. I highly doubt she will say. "We should have just gotten the cheaper display" Besides, having a better image quality may come in useful when and if she decides to get into photos. At least you know the monitor will be there and be capable of meeting those needs in the future. I bought many monitors in the past 10 years and a monitor is something you don't upgrade as often as a computer. Hehe well... for me anyways I been upgrading monitors more often than a pc. But, for most people out there, getting a good monitor is good investment.

+1; I agree with the above statement entirely ^^^^^^^

I bought a Dell 2209WA for my Mom and she loves it. You will need to turn the brightness down a good bit when you first set it up but after that you are good. I was surprised how good the colors were right out of the box. I did not bother calibrating it

Thanks for the input, I guess the Dell it is then.

2209wa can be had for $212-for that price why choose anything else?

Ok now you sparked my attention. Where are they selling the 2209WA for $212?

Edit: Ah ok, I should have done my due diligence before asking. I will contact Christa and see if this is still available.

Thanks all! [H] Forums rocks all they way!! :D
