Noob Question about SLI

My question is, with SLI do you need matching cards. I have a MSI 4gig gtx 680 card and was wondering if I could match it with a 2 gig card. I'm more familiar with AMD crossfire than SLI
 
IIRC, you can put them together, but you'll only have 4 gigs available, not the 6 gigs.

This isn't taking into consideration the obvious frame duplication across cards.

In other words, the most a single card will use is 2 gigs, even for the 4 gig card.
 
The 4GB card will only have 2GB available to it if you SLI it with a 2GB card.
 
In both SLI and Crossfire, 1GB + 1GB = 1GB, 2GB + 1GB = 1GB, 2GB + 2GB = 2GB, 4GB + 2GB = 2GB, and so on. This applies even to dual-GPU cards like the AMD 7970 X2 (billed as a 6GB but it's really 3GB + 3GB = 3GB) and the GTX 690 (2GB + 2GB = 2GB).
 
another noob question? does it matter how old your bridge connector is to go SLI ?

nope, i have used an SLi connector i got with my dfi lanparty and 2 6800's on an x58 system with gts450s, you should be good to go with any. just make sure it has the right spacing
