I am a PC gamer but my son talked me into buying a PS3 last month for the gaming and the blueray player. This is the 80GB version they have on sale now. It has been working well the last three weeks but now something is going odd.
When I put in a regular DVD or a BlueRay disk I either get nothing causing me to eject and re-insert or I get picture and the musical sound track but no voices.
It is connected via HDMI to my Onkyo receiver. It worked fine just last week when I viewed Ironman.

We do switch it inbetween two tvs, an SD and An HDTV. We had problems with that until we figured out how to reset the display settings.

Games play and sound fine. This is just a problem that recently occured with watching movies. I have tried reseting the system but no change to the issue.

Just throwing out some suggestions that you could try/check, if you already haven't...

Is your center speaker securely connected / working? I believe voices are channeled to the center channel for movies and games for multi channel sound.

Have you check off supported audio formats in the audio setting of the PS3? I think the default options are just 2 channel formats.

If you have an optical cable, try using that and see if it works. Again, you would have to go to the audio settings and select optical for the audio output.

You may also want to try switching from Linear PCM to Bitstream in the options. That's what I had to do with my aging sound system.

Found the center speaker unplugged. Sorry I should have checked connections long before posting. Funny how plugging that in sure helps with sound. Housekeeper must have been moving the speaker around and wire came out I still have problems with the disk not being read all the time but I believe that could be due to dirty Blue ray disks I am renting from Netflix.
