noob problem: 27' zenith hdtv

i have a zenith hdtv im tyring to use with my comp(need help with that to) i have to run it at 800x600 so i can actually read text. i can see a line that keeps going up the screen, and my games look all pixaly(sp?) i just bought this tv and its already pissing me off. i have a gainward 256mb 256bit card using the svideo until i can find a dvi cable.

whats wrong???

S-video is limited to 480i. Any desktop resolution higher than that is scaled by the tv encoding chip to 720x480 or 640x480. You aren't even using the HD capabilites of your Zenith yet. To do that, you'll need to either use DVI, VGA, or a VGA/DVI-to-component transcoder. Then you'll probably have to tweak the timings using powerstrip, unless your tv natively accepts pc timings.

The line you see going up the screen sounds like ground loop interferance. Does it looks like a white bar that goes up, especially visible in dark scenes? If you have cable, try disconnecting your cable line from the TV. If it goes away get this video isolation transformer. Just plug it in between the cable line and tv. There is also a Jensen version (google for VRD-1FF) that has a wider operating frequency, but at $50 it's a lot more expensive.
 
awesome, that will help a lot. ( is is a white line noticable during dark scences)

im waiting for dvi cables to be back in stock on newegg. but the senith has the 24 pins then to horzontal pins next to each other then a vertical pin

now do you think it will look stupid even if its clear and stuff? i have my couch (head will be 6 feet away), will i be able to use it normally of will i have to buy a 17" lcd and have it swing out from the couch? hehehe

Has a picture of what ground loops can look like. Mine looked a bit different. A sort of wide horizontal bar that moved up slowly. Sorta like what you would see when you film a computer screen with a video camera.

It should look pretty good if you get it all setup right. But it ultimately depends on the resolutions you can display. Lots of direct view HDTVs I've seen can only do 480p/1080i. So you may be limited on resolutions.

A 27" 4:3 tv at 480p would get you a 640x480 desktop. That wouldn't be the greatest thing to surf the web on, but movies would be ok. 1080i may be a better resolution. But your card has to be able to output 1440x1080i.

Getting a HDTV to accept a PC signal is going to take a lot of tweaking/research if it doesn't take normal pc timings. DVI on lots of HDTVs is designed for DVI enabled DVD players and STBs without regard to PCs.
