Ok so im totally overmy head, i havent overclocked a thing, and i just cant seem to get it done. Ive read the guide, tried to do what it sais but failed. It even wouldnt post once and i nearly shit my pants. (of course i regained my composure and cleared the cmos and it worked fine).

Clockgen crashes my system.

So, in my bios, i tried to up my FSB to 210 and woldnt get past BOOT FROM CD in the boot sequence, just kinda hung. (when i return to normal settings works fine)

Then i was like "o my ram yeah the guide talked about that" so i tried what i THINK was a devider (the dram frequency set) and that was a no go. Then i adjusted my timings(whatever those are. alteast i THINK i adjusted them). Still, nothing. My specs are in my sig. Am i completly stupid, mising something obvious? Or am i just outta luck with crap components?

The first thing you need to do is post your entire setup, including version numbers, and operating system, then read this:

Almost every overclocker feels overwhelmed at first. Don't think it's more complicated than it is. Even if it won't post, that's still not a huge deal. It is very hard to actually ruin parts of a computer. You would have to stray very hard from a guide. The true mark of an experienced guru is not 'never doing anything wrong', but being calm and rational when something does.

Specs are:
Opteron 170 CCBWE 0543TPMW
2 gig (2x 1g) GSKILL DDR3200
DFI SLI-DR EXPERT
2x wd 320gig SATA
ASUS DVD+-RW
Zalman 9500 LED w/AS5
ENERMAX LIBERTY 500w
BFG OC 7800 gtx 512

Those are all pretty high-quality parts. What are your crucial settings at right now?

Why are you booting from CD? Does it boot from HD? Do you have a setting for locking the PCI frequency?

Well my boot sequence is to look for the cd first. It usually goes..

boot from cd...

Finds nothing, then proceeds to my next boot device which is my hd and boots windows. And, i have an option to set the pci express frequency.

change it to boot to HD first. What is the pcie frequ set at?

Ill put it at bootin the hd when i get home, at work now.

Buuut i do remember that my pcie was set to 100mhz.

Maybe someone else could help you with what the pcie frequ should be set at. I have an agp board and have the AGP/PCI bus locked at 66/33mhz.

it shouldn't, most boards have those frequencies locked. Have you tried lowering your htt mulitplier? If its still at the default 5 that could be what was casuing your lockups, my board would do the same thing once I started going over 210. And when you say I think I adjusted the mem divider waht had you changed? The dividers should be under "Dram frequency set".

Ok so now, i made the dram divider like 5:6 or something, my ddr400 is now running at ddr333....and it booted with an overclock of 220x10. to get core speed of 2200. Now that dosnt make sence shouldnt my ram have to be FASTER?

ok dude. dont mess with the dram divider. the guy who made a oc guide on here even said that messing with that can cause some instability. and it will also possibly give you bottlenecks.

set your divider back to default.

here is how you find out what each component can do. or at least it worked for me

FSB
turn the htt multiplier to auto
set the cpu multiplier to 7
set the dram divider to 1:0.5 (cpu:ram)
then raise the fsb by 5 mhz
run prime95, if not errors in 5 minutes raise it another 5mhz
keep doing this until windows wont boot or you get a error in prime95
once you get to as far as you can get it, take away 7mhz and that should be your stable speed

RAM
set the htt multiplier to 3
set the cpu multiplier to 7
set the dram divider to 1:1 (cpu:ram)
raise the fsb in 5mhz increments and tests using memtest or prime95 until you get an error or the system wont boot or you get bluescreens
once you get to the point where you get errors drop it about 5-10mhz and that should be your stable speed

CPU
set the htt multiplier to 3
set the cpu multiplier to whatever the max number is
set the dram divider to 1:0.5 (cpu:ram)
do the same thing you did to test the cpu and fsb.

then once you got all the max specs then set the ram to 1:1 and the fsb and cpu multi to default.

here is the tricky part.

here are my specs

fsb max: 260
cpu max: 2.78ghz
ram max: 260

i booted up and it would get errors. so i upped the voltages a tad. then i still got errors, so i eliminated one thing at a time.

i dropped my fsb. still got errors. set everything back
dropped the divider. still got errors. set everything back
dropped the cpu multiplier. worked fine.

its alot of trial and error but i hope my post made sense. just take your time and make sure its done correctly and dont freak out if you get errors or it wont post. jsut reset and try again.

he's going to have to use ram dividers, there's noway he's going to be able to get his max o/c if he's going to be limited by 3200 ram. He's got a default mulitplier of 10, 7 is way to low he'd be best keeping it stock. Drop the htt mulit to 3, and then use a dividers to keep his ram within its limits while he overclocks his cpu. tskiller do you have cpu-z? You can use that to keep track of your speeds.

I'd try loosening memory timings or upping memory voltage before I'd use a divider.

i know what youre saying but if he does use the memory divider then the memory will be working out of sync with the rest of the computer. which will lead to bad performance. if your ram cant go any higher, then he should buy faster ram like ddr500.

and i think i worded myself worng but having the cpu multi at 7 was only for testing the max of other components. once he gets the max of everything then it should be set back to default.

My suggestion? Calm down, take a deep breath. Good.

Now remember, only overclock one component at a time to find each components peak. Then, go back and start coordinating the entire "overclock".

To find peak memory speed? Drop the CPU multiplier to 5x and your LDT to 3x, and keep going up until you can't go any further.

To find peak CPU speed? Drop the memory divider to 1:2 or the lowest one you can, as well as LDT to 3x. And keep going until you cannot go any further.

Just read over Eclipse's guide, and you should be fine. It seems way more difficult than it is.
