im trying to find out if i can buy a socket 478 mobo for my proc that i have. its a 1.5ghz p4 out of an old sony vaio. i looked on intels site and it says its a 423 pin proc though. will those fit on a 478 mobo? thanks for your help.

The P4 1.5 Ghz proc was a Socket 423 Willamette Pentium 4. They will not fit in the Socket 478.

if it was the opposite, it would work with powerleaps adapter

Willamette=Socket 423 and socket 478
Northwood=Socket 478
Prescott=Socket 478 and LGA775

That's how all desktop Pentium 4's break down socket wise. So to directly answer your question, no not all P4's come in the same socket type.

wow thanks for your replies guys. im just going to count the pins to see what i have. i talked to a friend of mine and he said it might be either one. thanks guys.

Actually, here is a simpler question to ask:

If the size of the processor module is about an inch and a half square (rough measurements), then it's a Socket 423 processor. But if it's smaller than that (about an inch square), then it's a Socket 478 processor.

powerleap makes an adapter that will allow 423 boards to run 478 p4's. only 400fsb ones but if the board allows 133fsb you might be able to get a 533 one to run.

In your case, I'd look for an i845D, i845E or i845PE-chipset-based mobo for it - or, if you have RDRAM, then a Socket 478 i850 series chipset-based mobo for that CPU. Some of the newer Intel-chipset-based (i865PE) mobos 'unofficially' support Willamette processors (even though that chipset doesn't officially support them).
