I'm going to be borging some computers pretty soon. These are part of a computer lab at my school - my girlfriend is the chair, so I have permission to do this.

Anyway, the computers are set up with 2 users - Administrator (needs password) and Student (no password).

I'm just wondering.. if I login as Admin, install F@H and start the service, will it run when the student user logs on? Or will it only run while Admin is logged on? Thanks.
 
if you install it as a service it should start up when anyone logs in..
 
Good to know. Should be adding about 10 Core 2 Duo's and about 10 older P4s under my name. I don't think I'm lucky enough for them to have graphics cards, though. :(
 
if you are just doing cpu.. you might want to look in WCG instead of FAH...since just in the install alone it gives you a lot of options on how to install the program depending on how you want it to start up.. plus its multi threaded and probably wont freak out as much when people log on and off.. plus its much friendlier when cpu intensive programs are started up.. it will free up cpu usage.. where FAH tends to just take it all and not give any back.. but its up to you..

The standard client does not have the issues that the beta SMP client does.

On the dule core, if you can install two clients :)
 
Not to be evil or anything, but make sure the permission is in writing. I am serious, as others here will atest to. Losing all your points is not good.
 
is borging illegal? I could see how it could be seen as immoral perhaps... Is it ok as long as you don't get caught?

You cannot run F@H on any computer without permission of the owner per the EULA

If a complaint is made and you don't have all your ducks in a row, your points will be wiped out and every machine that has returned work under your name will be blacklisted. Besides that, if they're work machines, you could get fired. Both of these things have happened before, there's threads linked in the Horde Central thread.

The standard client service starts up when the OS boots. It's independant of any user account, meaning that it'll even run when sitting at the login screen before anyone has logged in. The SMP client doesn't play nice as a service though, so that isn't really an option for borging.
 
I don't mean to thread hijack, but just wondering how is a machine "blacklisted?" Mac Address? IP?
 
The computers will be in a "Learning Center" that is in our department. They belong to our department, of which my girlfriend is the chair. She has told me it's OK. I suppose I could get her to give it to me in writing, but I'm not too worried.

I'll try a few out first with F@H and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions.

you should still get it in writing though, just like someone here who lost 12million points :eek: well if i recall he didn't even ask for permission in the first place!

 
So how would I lose points?

Would Stanford be emailing me saying "You have a sudden increase in points and we want to make sure it's legit. Please provide a scanned copy of written permission to authenticate your borging." or something along those lines?
 
Its if someone complains to Stanford that they found folding on the computer.
Then without valid proof that there was permission for it to be there, thats when your points get zero'd.

Some one goes to Stanford and says we had a program install with a username of XYZ. This was done with out our permission.

Stanford then Zeros the points for your username.

 
ah, well, I'm pretty sure I'd be safe. Only students will be using these computers, and they won't be checking the Program Files or anything. As long as they have IE 6 and can view their Wretch (Taiwanese Myspace) pages, they'll be happy.

I'll be sure to get it in writing beforehand, though.
