Non-widescreen monitors? How about a "tall" widescreen?

Being one of those "CRT-People" I really like my near-squarish monitor. With windows and programs both grabbing space at the top and bottom, widescreen doesn't leave too much room to work with.

Are there any decent non-widescreen monitors being made? I'd be looking for one to do 1920x1440 or better.

I know it would be hard to get people to give up their widescreen monitors, because I suspect that most of them just think of it as a wider version of a smaller monitor, and so more room = better! To take care of this, 5x4 aspect ratio monitors should be re-introduced with much fanfare as "tall widescreen" monitors. Not only is it wide, it's tall, and there it plenty of bonus space at the top and bottom! Go ahead, have the double-height taskbar, you've got room to spare on a tall widescreen!

Your only good solution is to jump to a 30" panel and go 2560x1600. I've only had CRT's that go 1920x1440.

Psh, 5:4 is nothing. How about 10:16?

Seriously though, buy a 24" 1920x1200 and run it in portrait - problem solved :)

I was a hardcore 5:4 type until I bought and used a 24" 16:10. Now I have a 27" 16:10 and it is the perfect size for me in both directions. 16:10 does a better job of filling your field of vision. There is no way I would go back to 5:4, in fact I am planning to sell my old laptop so I can get one with a wide screen.

The bottom line is you have to go to a larger size when you go wide screen. This is true with TVs too.

I went from a 17" non-widescreen to a 22" widescreen and they are roughly the same height.

I used to be anti-widescreen and now I can't imagine ever switching back.

why would you want more vertical space? that's not how your eyes work...

4:3 and 5:4 never made any sense to begin with

sweet, show me a display that is 8.5x11"
That's the point, smart guy: he is looking for something that gives him a display which matches things we use in everyday life.

That being said, my 24" "widescreen", 19x12 rez, is perfect. Viewable space is awesome, and a damn browser window is larger than the entire screen of my old 19" "square-ish", 12x10 rez, LCD.

My wife's new 21.5" 19x10 res "widescreen" is too wide though. It just makes the monitor feel like the extra width is wasted space - no different from the 12x10 in usable view.

The paper compairson makes no sense, because the scroll wheel on the mouse makes any screen as tall as you want.

Get a 30 inch wide screen and put two tall docs side by side. Instead of a sheet of paper you will have a book.

Seriously no one will make a tall monitor, because there just is not a market for it.

I do think that 9:16 is too wide for computer use tho.

There's no brilliant options really. I agree square monitors are great for every day use. Though I personally like widescreen because I watch TV on my PC. Also widescreen lets me have TV on one side of the screen and using the other side for web browsing or work.

One thing to consider is with using a 1920x1200 in portrait is that 1200 pixels isn't really wide enough. It falls short of 1280 by 80 pixels, but those 80 pixels is enough to become annoying at times.

I've been monitor shopping for a while now and I'm starting to lean towards 3 1600x1200 monitors in Eyefinity over a single, big 16:10 monitor. I don't watch TV, but I play MW2 and do a lot of work in multiple programs simultaneously. Widescreen doesn't help much, because I like to open a spreadsheet full screen on one monitor and another program full screen on another (and another program on a third, if I had it). For gaming, Eyefinity across 3 5x4 monitors would look great, I think.

The question is finding a 1600x1200 monitor that supports Display Port. That's what I'm looking for now. Any help would be appreciated.
