non-n00b with seriously weird problem

Alrighty, I have a customer computer here in the office and it is giving me the strangest problem. Ok, at home, the customer uses a wireless usb-connected keyboard & mouse, which works just fine. In the office, however, we use standard ps/2 mice/keyboards, as they generall work every single time (duh). Not so in this machine! The machine will POST and boot to the windows screen just fine. I can move the mouse around and select one of the users. However, when I press any keyboard key, the mouse and keyboard both hard freeze (aka, num lock & such are frozen on or off). At first, I thought the machine was freezing, but upon further investigation with a usb keyboard, it would appear the ps/2 ports are freezing completely separate from the computer itself, which continues to run just peachy.

I read somewhere that irq conflicts might be the culprit, but unfortunately I'm from a new(er) school of hardware where, in general, irq's don't give me much problem in win 2000/xp. WTF is going on?


Customer Computer's relevant specs:

Abit KG7-RAID mobo
512 MB pc2700
athlon xp 2000+
sh*tton of usb ports (native and addon)

help me uber [H] gawds! :(
 
Had the same problem before w/ Microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse, just upgrade the drivers and gone, but before i found out, in order to use, I had to turn the computer on, then I had to restart (without touching the keyboard!!) and when the computer would boot the second time the keyboard would work fine...

Sounds good in theory (aka, you're probably right on), but how does one do this when in order to get to device manager, one needs to have the keyboard plugged in through a ps/2 port, which would freeze?

P.S. would re-installing (or upgrading) the latest chipset drivers help anything at all, or do the chipset drivers just affect things like USB & IDE drivers?
 
Have you tried a USB keyboard? I have a compaq machine thats just holding some files for me that will not use a PS2 keyboard. Compaq came with the USB board which i used. I tried using the PS2 and it wouldnt find a Keyboard. Also might want to check in bios there is a setting for USB Legacy keyboard. Maybe this will help if you changed it. Make sure you change it back thought before you give it back to customer.

Yeah, as previously stated, it works just fine with a USB keyboard; my problem is I know somewhere down the line when the customer gets a PS/2 keyboard and tries to plug it in, I'm going to have to go over there and tell him I knew about the problem and couldn't fix it. That's a bad position to be in, so I figured since I have some extra time now that I would try to fix it now and, if I couldn't, go ahead and tell him I found the problem, but it wasn't going to affect him unless blah blah blah...

Sorry, I sound like an @$$hole, but I'm just in a crappy mood due to this stupid problem :p Thank you for trying to help as I requested! :D

Np man, everyone gets frustrated at stupid PC problems....i totally understand where you coming from. Sorry couldnt be more help =(

Thanks for understanding, d00d. I'm just gonna leave the problem there hoping it won't get worse (I already told the guy and he says he doesn't care!). :eek:
