i cut a window in my cdrom, a semi circle over the back of the tray, its a rather tight fit with teh spinning mechanism so i was wondering if i have to put glass in it or if i can just leave it as is

i wouldnt leave it open- you'll end up getting all sorts of crap in there and have to clean the lens all the time. transparency idea is a good one.

if i where you i wouldn't think about leaving it open. because if i look to myself i am always working with fans etc. when the computer is on. so if you are working on cable management and you would have a cd or a dvd rollin .... think about the los of a finger and a repainted case for free. if you understand what i mean. maby not the best way to say it but i hope you catch my drift.

One alternative to transparancy material would be to use the clear plastic part of a CD jewel case. That would be clear and sturdy, and it should be thin enough to fit in your drive.

that would be cool if you put an image on the transparancy and a LED or something behind it.
