Ok so to explain my setup, I'm using the HDMI port on the graphics card to connect the receiver (Pioneer vsx-521), another HDMI going from the receiver to the monitor.

The problem is that I hear a hiss from the speakers. The noise seems to be generated from the computer, if I unplug the HDMI the hiss goes away. I've tried switching the HDMI to different inputs on the receiver. As it stands I have the HDMI coming from the AMD 6970. When I tested the HDMI output from the onboard graphics, I have a different result. The hissing is present as before but the hissing stops after about 5 seconds, if I play a sound on the computer the hissing resumes. I'm assuming that the onboard graphics is attenuating the signal after a period of silence.

The hissing is variable, I can change the loudness of the hiss by turning the volume up or down on the receiver. The hiss doesn't change however if I adjust the volume on the computer. To compensate for this, I'm keeping the volume of the receiver set to about 28-30 and the computer about 3/4 to full. That keeps the hiss to barely audible, it's still annoying since I can't stop focusing on it.

Is there a setting that I'm overlooking, on either the computer or the receiver? I can't get this one figured out.
 
Any other HDMI sources connected to the AVR? If so, do they experience the same issue?

I'd suspect the AVR and not the PC. HDMI is digital. So with no audio present, there is no signal, unless there is some sort of static or interference being introduced within the PC. If you have another AVR in the house (or one available to you), you could swap units and see what happens.
 
What's the audio source? Are you using the AMD HD Audio device with the 6970?

Could also be poor grounding/electrical work in the house. Household power is anything but clean. I'd also test different physical signal inputs on the AVR.
 
Well, the noise is coming from the computer. I connected the xbox via HDMI to the same port the computer is using and the noise was gone. I also tested by plugging my phone's hdmi up to it, once again noise free.

And to verify I'm using the AMD high definition audio device when connected to the 6970.
And the Intel high definition audio device when connected to the motherboard's onboard port

I'm confused, when I connect to my computers onboard analog audio output it's relatively noise free.

I think I should just turn the fans on my PC up a little to increase the noise floor in the room, so that I can't hear the hiss. :D
 
How many speakers do you have?
Is it a 2.1 or 5.1 setup?
What motherboard?
 
What I suspect is happening is this: Because the HDMI output from the PC is always going to be sending video data from the GPU, its probably sending white noise as the audio portion when no audio is being played on the PC. That would explain why setting the receiver volume would adjust the noise level at least...

If you do not use the HDMI output as the default windows audio output device, does the hiss go away?

This makes since, because the volume changes the level of the hiss and it comes equally from all speakers.

I'll test and see when I get home.
