I don't mean to cause any kind of long argument here, but is it true that most Maxtor drives are a bit noiser than WD drives?

I also hear that Seagates 7200.9 & 7200.8 Series drives are some of the quietest.

true, but when the new WD 500GB drive came out, it was made king for the most silent drive ever made

So are you saying that if I want a silent hdd, get a 500GB? (lol)

What would you suggest for a 250GB.

samsung spinpoint P120 (or whatever the follow up to the P80 is called)

Did you read the review I linked to in the second post in this thread? SPCR tested the WD5000KS against the Samsung SpinPoint P80, the quietest drive still manufactured (until now); as well as the Seagate Barracuda ATA IV, held to be in the past as the quietest drive ever. WD5000KS was quieter than all of them in it's max Automated Acoustics Management (AAM) mode.

Without any kind of scientific testing, through my experiences, Maxtors have always been the loudest. They seem to make much more noise when seeking/reading, etc than Seagate or WD.

i was just simply stating that the WD 500gb drive is THE quietest drive EVER made. it was never my intent to imply the 7200.8 and 7200.9 are not quiet. just that the tests in the 2nd post show that WD has the quiestest drive now.
