I'm not sure how many "silent pc" modders/enthusiasts here, but I'm one of them.

I have a silent fanless mini-itx trundling away for my peace/quiet workstation and an almost silent SB62G2 as my game machine right now.

Those of you who are into this kind of thing I'm sure you know of Leadtek's Winfast a400 series... claiming ~30 dB for their non-ultra/GT/Ultra 6800's.

The problem is, the GT/Ultra's are 2-slots and they won't fit in my shuttle gaming/lan machine.

So it means I'll have to go looking for a 1-slot GT (pretty much everything else) and I'm wondering if any of you quiet pc people have heard one.

Essentially I'm hoping that over my 30 dB stock case fan (I know, loud but I haven't gotten 'round to replacing it yet), with my computer underneath a table (essentially something between me and it) about a meter away... will I be able to tell when the GT is on? (currently with that situation I do not know whether my computer is on or not except in the dead of night and I'm listening for it...)

If not... bah, I guess I may try getting one anyway and modding it.

Oh yeah... any luck with 6800 non-ultras w/1 GB system RAM and a decent CPU handling Doom 3 @ 1280x768 (widescreen) 2xAA/8xAF? If so that would solve my problems since the leadtek nearly-silent solution will work:p

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, if you have a quiet system, the 6800GT will make it noticeably louder. I have a BFG 6800GT in my whisper quiet Dell 400SC and the noise coming out of my box has roughly doubled. Mind you the system only had 1 temp controlled CPU fan that is piped straight out the back with a shroud and a small fan on the power supply before. I don't get into the dB measurements, so I can't really quantify the noise increase for you.

On the bright side, the fan on the 6800 heatsink is temperature controlled, so you may get better results in a well cooled room (my Florida office gets quite warm). Also, my PC is currently on my desk so I'm fairly close to the fans.

A friend of mine recently commented on how quiet my system was compared to his stock nf2/2500xp rig and was suprised when I told him I also had a 6800GT inside.
