i'm considering this. my northbridge is always getting super hot. .

i may put a fan on it since its big enough!!! can i fit a 120mm fan on it?

i usually get 32 idle celsius on my overclocked opty 165 (clocked to 2600mhz). my northbridge gets to 40 but once it gets hot, it gets up to 45, sometimes 47. and its not summer yet!

would this fit the bill for me?

i have a dfi 3200 939 board

well the cooler itself is 3 inches tall which is ~76mm so a 120mm fan would be WAY to large for it IMO.

hell even a 92mm fan would be to large.

Regardless, it's going to cool a lot better than stock, so I'd purchase one & see how your temps are & if they're still to high, strap on a nice 80mm fan & you should be set ;)

IMHO the cooler works great and as for a fan, a 60mm is all that will fit in the cutout.......... It keeps my nVidia 650i chipset nice and chilly..............:D

I have switched my setup - but here is what I had previously.
It was AWESOME, but the problem was that the Ultra-120 would only fit facing downward instead of towards the exhaust.

If I could have gotten the Ultra-120 to face towards the exhaust, then there probably wouldn't have been enough room for the HR-05.

Either way, it looked awesome in my case and the Northbridge temps never climbed near as high as when it was stock cooled.

In addition, if you check the pic - you'll see that I moved the stock NB cooler over to the SB chip for even more additional cooling. :D

Too bad she wasn't practical - I really liked that setup.

hey Evoic, can you fit a graphics card onto the top pcie slot with the northbridge cooler on the southbridge?, it would seem like it would get in the way when i look at my board

I have a single 7950GT that I ran in the lower slot.
My guess is that you'd have a tough time running SLI with any of the larger / newer generation cards - but maybe 2 x 6600GT's would fit in there.

just get one of the evercool VC-RE coolers
Dunno, mine buzzes at 12V and my POS CFX3200 refuses to adhere to the temperatures to shut off or full blast the fan in the BIOS. Plus it was a bit of pain to install because the bracket is slightly longer than the mobo's mounting holes spacing. I was afraid of uneven contact until I saw the temps. Probably a defective RE, but rather than go back to stock or spend more on a second RE, I chucked that cooler for an HR-05. Well worth it since I will not be running CF.

matrix563, don't worry about the NB until it cracks probably over 60. The stock cooler (refitted w/AS5) kept it under 51 and those temps didn't affect stability whatsoever (even at 1.34v). I believe the max operating temp for the RD580 is around 80. If noise is an issue, that Noctua will do 'er good even without a fan.

You did not mention that the heat was causing a problem. ;) I have never had my OC limited by what my NB was doing. Have tried cooling it before to see if it made a diff....for me..nope.
