No video on new comp, need help.

Troubleshooting my cousin's comp....

Hey all,

My cousin just got a new computer: CPU, motherboard, case, etc.. etc...

Parts:
Intel "D865PERL" i865PE Chipset Motherboard
Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz 400MHz FSB, 128K Cache
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9200SE
Crucial 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-2100
Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM HDD
POWMAX Case


So we put it all together and I turned it on and everything turns on as normal, LED on mobo lights up, fans spin and everything. But for soem reason nothing shows on the monitor. I tried just about everything i heard from people. I tried messing with wiring, then i just stripped it down so the only things plugged in were the bare essentials, cpu, mobo, psu, ram, video card. Still nothing... I tried running it out of the case and on the anti-static bag it came in, but nothing... I RMAed the motherboard and CPU and still NOTHING! I tried swapping video cards and I even proved that the video card works because I put it in my computer and it worked fine. Now the RAM I switched with mine, but its the exact same kind. I have no idea what the problem is. Is it a compatibility issue? Oh, and of course, I tried different monitors and power supplies. When I turn it on, there are no beeps whatsoever from the motherboard. Anyone have any suggestions? My last resort is to just send either the cpu or motherboard back and get a complete different one. I was thinking of sending the motheroard back and getting a cheaper MSI "P4MAM-V" P4M266A Chipset Motherboard. Let me know guys, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
 
i just had a mobo that was defective. didnt beep when i turned on the pc, and if that doesnt happen, im almost positive that the mobo is the problem. make sure no parts of it are touching metal
 
It could be the motherboard Bro. Do you have the power lines ran correct? I'm sure you do. Try to use a different slot for the video card and see what happens.
 
thanks for the suggestions guys, like i said i RMAed the motherboard already and the cpu and i got the same results, nuthing. Which abit should i get that will work good with the cpu i have already? (Celeron 1.7 400MHz FSB)
 
You'll have to check the campatability on the mobo first. I'm not sure which ones will work off the top of my head. Sorry.
 
Ok, well... if your comps fans and lights come on, but nothing else there are really only a handful of things that it can be (that I am aware of). Normally it is because either the video card (or other pci card), ram or cpu is not seated properly. Or because your mobo is shorting out.

Try taking your mobo out of the case and starting it with only minimum components on a non-conductive, non-abrasive surface. This should eliminate the possibility of the motherboard shorting out on you.

Also, when you take out your ram and video card, make sure there is nothing obstructing the sockets that you plug them into. Use compressed air to get anything out that might be in there. Then put it all together on that non-conductive surface and try it out again. Do not plug in anything except the video card, ram, and power supply. this will eliminate the possibility that any other components are causing the problem. Make sure those components are all seated firmly in their spot. The first time you put ram into a mobo you generally have to press very firmly to get it to seat well. And of course the white tabs on the side of your ram should pop closed by themselves when the ram is seated properly.

If you still have no luck I would take your processor and hsf off, check for bent pins or other probs. Re-seat the processor and hsf making sure you have a very minimal amount of paste between the two. Lastly, clear the cmos (see your manual for directions) and then try it all again.

If THAT doesnt work, try finding some compatible ram and a vid card that you could borrow or use to trouble shoot the rest of the system. Just make double-sure you are grounding yourself, especially when handling other peoples components. You dont want to give anything back dead. Don't borrow anything you cant afford to replace! Wipe your shoes! err... anyway, good luck, let us know how it goes
