No video from second DVI port?

Hi all,

I just got a second monitor. I've used two before (A TV and a monitor) both connected via DVI. The issue I'm having now is that one of my DVI ports doesn't seem to want to display a valid signal, despite it having done so in the past. Whenever I plug either monitor into it, the monitor either goes into power saver mode, or says the video signal is not valid. Windows and nvidia control panel are able to recognize the monitor fine. I should mention I now have SLI 460's, as opposed to the single card I had last time this worked.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks,
~Rock

Does the port work with a single monitor plugged in? It could be a bad port, or it could be that your monitors are analog and there is only one analog DVI port. The second DVI port on the GTX 460 is digital only (DVI-D). Try using a DVI to VGA adapter if your monitor(s) support VGA as well.

Here's some info on DVI connectors/cables that may help:

I'm going to try a DVi -> VGA adapter tonight. The port does not work with just one monitor, checked last night. I swore it used to work though. They both support HDCP, according to the nV control panel, which would mean they are dvi-d capable, yes?

Control panels are not always an accurate source of information. I would suggest looking up the model number(s) of your monitors for some detailed tech specs. If you post them here, I can look them up for you.

One is a Dell E207WFP, the other is a Dell U2412M

From what I could tell, both of them should be digital displays. The USB ports on the U2412M are a very nice feature! I may wind up having to get one of those for myself!

Let me know if the DVI-VGA adaper works or not. It might be a bad port after all. :(

Do you see anything with a monitor plugged into the 2nd port during boot-up (BIOS POST)?

Thanks, I'm liking it so far :)

I'm not sure if I tried only one monitor plugged in during POST. I'll try that as well. Thanks for the help.

So it works with a DVI -> VGA adapter. Very strange. Any idea why this works, yet a DVI cable doesn't?

That is petty strange... only thing I can think of is that the second DVI port may be having trouble pulling the EDID info from your monitors and thus not allowing a digital output through that port. Perhaps you could try a DVI to DP (display port) adapter/cable since the U2412M has a DP input. If that doesn't work, you may need to rma the card.

It recognizes the model and native resolution of the monitor that's plugged in, which would tell me it's getting at least some of the EDID info. I think I'm going to live with using VGA, as it's not being run a long distance and looks fine for a secondary monitor. Thanks anyway!
