No sound through 3.5mm

Laptop is an Asus X54C. Sound comes out of the internal speakers just fine but when you plug something into the 3.5mm jack you get no sound no matter if it's headphones or a 3.5mm to RCA's going to my stereo. It does recognize that you have plugged something into the jack via notification near the clock as well as when you unplug it. This is in Windows 7. In Ubuntu 12.10 the jack works correctly so it's not a hardware issue. Tried reinstalling the realtek hd drivers, didn't do anything. I'm stumped.

Did you expand the mixer in Windows 7? (Left-click the speaker icon, click "Mixer".)

Sounds like when you plug in headphones that they're muted. Did you also dig around in the playback devices (Windows 7) area and make sure your headphones weren't muted? Dig around in the headphones (or external speakers) properties to see if some feature that would mute them is enabled.

Nothing is muted anywhere. Headphones are not listed under playback devices when plugged in even though I get a notification that I "just plugged a device into the audio jack" when I plug them in.

I will see if realtek has newer drivers or if they're the same as on the Asus support page for my laptop.

Also, device manager shows both "Intel Display Audio" as well as "Realtek High Definition Audio"?

Edit: Intel display audio allows sound through HDMI, correct? I could just disable it for now.
Edit 2: Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers again to no avail. I don't understand, it works fine in Ubuntu.

Yes, Intel audio should be for HDMI.

My only thought is to make sure the volume isn't turned all the way down (pretty obvious if you checked for mute already) Other than that I'd right click on the speaker in the task bar and click on playback devices. It should list headphones in the output once they are plugged in. Look through all the settings there and, poke around a bit. Beyond that I dont have a clue why its not working.

Open the Sound control panel (not the Realtek HD Audio Manager). In the Playback tab, you'll see "Select a playback device below". In that box where the playback devices are listed, right-click and make sure that checkmarks are next to "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices". One of those devices should be the 3.5mm output, and hopefully it will be obvious which one it is, but I have no idea what the title for that will be so you may have to just experiment. For each device, right-click it, click the "Properties" button, and in the "Device usage" section, select "Use this device (enable)". Click "Apply", and see if that device is the one for the 3.5mm jack.
