my newer comp came with no serial port (RS-232 if i remember) and i have devices that use serial and future mods that use serial. My question is should i get a USB to serial which are 30$, get a parallel to serial adaptor since my printer is USB (cheaper) or build a usb to serial. i searched for the latter but ddidn't see anything too promising. It would be cool to try and build it. what should i do?

How many serial ports do you need now and plan on for the future? There are also addon PCI serial cards that you can buy. I don't know the prices. I am just thinking the parallel to serial is ok, but that only gives you one. Then you probably don't want to tie up your usb for future devices you might get that will require usb. I don't know. For serial I would probably go the cheapest route I could find.

I would most likely choose to get a USB to Serial adapter. Use the printer on the Parallel since you most likely won't use that port for anything but a printer anyways. That way you won't use up one of your USBs for something you don't have to. Plus USB ports tend to be more plentiful on motherboards so you aren't sacrificing much.

i only need 1 since I won't be using all the serial devices at once. I know about the cards but the comp is off the shelf and i paid for a warranty so i don't want to open it unless warranty is up. i guess i'll go usb since i have 7 ports and a 4 port hub lying in wait. anybody have a good duide to making one?

If you could, you could try to make a USB to Serial adapter, and you might find some people on these forums that could help you there, as well as on the net. Obviously, the easier solution would be to buy the adapter, I personally wouldn't get a Parallel to Serial adapter, it would be easier to find, install and use a USB to Serial adapter (that's what I reckon anyway). But of you are up for a challenge, make one yourself. Its a great way to learn how it works.

i'm up to the challenge of building it unless it uses smt chips, the ones w/ the really small pins close together. otherwise i love moding so i'd try it.

I'd be willing to bet that most usb->rs232 converters use smt chips. Unless you have some compelling reason to build it yourself, it will probably be easier to buy one.

i just did some more extensive searching and it would be more than the cost of buying one to build it so i guess i have to buy it. :( but maybe i can add LEDs or something
