I got a new mobo (ASUS A8V-DX no wifi K8T890 DDR GBLAN ) and a AMD Athlon 64 ( 939 ) 3000+. both retail and came pretested from monarchcomputer.com

so, i set it all up, and i get no post at all. no video out to the monitor. no beeps. the monitor light comes on for 2 secs when pc is turned on and then goes back to yellow (idle). i unplugged almost everything (even HDs) and nothing. all the other components are working, as i just reverted to my earlier setup.

the HDD is from my earlier setup and was NOT reformated. it had/has xp pro on it.

other specs

boot hd : 160gb wd 8mb cache
vid : 6800nu
ram : 1X256 micron 1x256 pny 1x256 ocz all @ pc2700. (i've tried it with just one stick on and get the same result).

should i call and rma tomorrow?

I'm not sure if this is your problem but I've heard that 90nm (Winnie) A64 processors sometimes won't POST without a BIOS flash of the motherboard to a newer version that supports the new core. Now if your system was tested for compatibility or whatever then I would assume they made sure it would POST, but you never know...

Also have you tried booting with everything out except CPU and RAM? You won't be able to see anything but if you get a tone you'll be able to start troubleshooting at least.

cpu fan (connected to mobo) runs. does this signal that there's no short?

shorts just stop the mobo from booting, everything else will spin up fine, I've had waayyyy too much experience with them ;)

also since your CPU fan is connected to the mobo for sure, then that rules out one more possible cause

your memory setup is wrong. you either have to have 1, 2 or 4 sticks of memory of the same size in the board. three sticks will not work with this mobo. its explained in the manual.

works now. i put the thing together again and it worked fine (running only 1 stick now).

i think it may have been contact w/ the case.
