no post, problem with memory?

I'm trying to get old dell to post.
E6300 with samsung pc2 4200
it doesn't post, if I use higher pc2 5300 stick, it post
but why not with 4200?
E6300 is old conroe
tower came with 2x1GB pc2 4200 sticks, tried one by one, different slots, no difference....
both sticks does same no post
if ram is bad, shouldn't it at least post?
can't even run memtest

any idea?
 
Put in the 5300 memory and reload bios defaults. Then try your other memory again.

Yeah, that or hit the CMOS reset jumper / button. There's really nothing else you can do when a computer won't post short of swapping out hardware.
