A recent survey says that 29% of U.S. households do not have the internet and have no plans to get it in the near future. That means we can make fun of all those people and they’ll never know.

A little under one-third of U.S. households have no Internet access and do not plan to get it, with most of the holdouts seeing little use for it in their lives, according to a survey released on Friday.

I wonder what % can't get broadband. Like myself.

I pray to the broadband gods every night but I feel like they aren't listening. :(

If I were you, I'd get satellite internet, or mobile broadband if its available in your area. It would be alot faster than 56k.

I had to deal with that awful dialup for something to the tune of 4 years.. i feel your pain. my parents still deal with it, since 2001 and going just as slow as ever..

We have satellite in two of our shops and it sucks...big time, it's comparable to stupidly expensive dial up....

Just my two cents... that's all.

And I would die without the internets thingy as well:p

My friend has satellite interent. It is fast, buy the delay is ridicolous. If you want to game on it, dont count on it.

I've used it before.. and the delay is bad, but I got around 500k download speeds. Don't remember the company though. I used it at a friend's cabin.

I have like 2 clients that use sat. Seems to work ok for surfing the net.

For the people that said they don't have internet I wonder if they have cell phones. Getting harder to get one that doesn't support internet browsing in some forum.

Hi all,

Just my 2 cents. I thought the internet would be a great thing 10 years ago, but now with all the 'exploits' out for web browsers and the like I don't know anymore. I feel paranoid all the time. Even thought I keep my virus scanner 'up to date' (and scan regularly), I feel more and more that something, undetected, will get in and compromise my security and suddenly i'll be the victim of ID theft and all that goes with it. Let's face it, if someone wants you ID info, they are going to get it, sooner or later, one way or another, be it on the internet or via 'snail mail', 'dumpster diving', etc. I'm starting to feel that the lesser and more time consuming method, snail mail, dumpster diving, or phone calls is the the more secure (for us) of the two evils. It almost makes me want to 'unplug' from the internet because it's too easy for ID thieves. I will no longer do any banking or purchasing on the internet.

In closing, I would like to say, that Microsoft, Mozilla, and anyone who is promoting a browser, to be able to purchase online MUST (if they haven't already) garauntee, MY IDENTITY, against fraud, beyond just money (there are many other ways to leverage ID theft) if they want me to 'buy' online.

A little paranoid are we not?

Now that is Classic!

Just don't be a moron on the internet and your fine. Being paranoid also does not help.

29% of Americans must be crazy gay-hating red necks or too poor to afford the overpriced internets......btw doesn't something like 90% of the population of sweden or norway or one of those European countries have broadband?

Gay hating? Probably more like 70% (not including gays, I really am starting to wonder just how many people are gay, or bi...seems like I find new ones (especially lesbians! :D) all the time) of Americans there. :D

Those 29% will either probably die soon, or be forced to get it soon.

Besides, remember that 98%+ of businesses have internet for a business purpose, and you'll realize that the 29% figure will probably drop soon.

Theres a guy that says that at work. Yet when he is at work his worthlessness is over whelming because he never does anything. At all. Ever.

Because hes always on the internet...I can't believe I left that out. So...sorry for the double post. Heh.

They're probably better off without it. People waste so much time on the internet it's rediculous.

Actually I'd like to see about half the people already on the internet leave. They're morons. The people not using it are most likely benefiting those who are.

Please enlighten us on why you think of this, I actually would like to know your reasons.

I found out that I have learned quite a bit about computers, how to do better research and learn about anything via the Internet.

I'm sure most, of those people, are older folks who never got into computers at all, like my mother who adamantly refuses to learn how to use a computer, eventhough she got my old watercooled Koolance setup, eventhough my aunts all bug her to get an e-mail address..

Most cities are turning to complete wireless coverage like in Seattle and Bryant Park in NY. Long Island(where I live) will be completely wireless soon, with the local government offering the service like the way your local library offers free internet...

Smaller countries in Europe have an advantage that they do not have as many remote places like here in the STATEs..If you live in the middle of nowhere, getting high-speed broadband or even wireless is going to be a pain...

But think about it, 10 years ago about 70%, of the population, didn't use the Internet at all...

So for only 29% now is a great accomplishment, and most of the people now choose to not use the internet instead of it not being available to them...

:/ thats sad, even my grandma in Taiwan has dsl! I have cable modem and a friend has 20mbps dl speed at his condo :/

much of those 29% are probably poor households who need the money for food or old people who could give a rats ass about anything more complicated than a tv remote.

I'd say most of that 29% are elderly folks who could care less and really who'd blame them. The rest are either very low on the poverty line (and should be able to get it for free IMHO) or are in an area that does not recieve broadband.

What % of the 29% is Amish though?

.001%

Seriously, they're a very low percentage of our population. Also, with todays Amish people it is likely they will have at least one computer for their village or settlement or whatever, same with native Americans on reservations.

I <3 the internet, its all i can pass my time with since i dont have a tv. Hmm i wonder what the % is for households without tv's, id guess alot less than 30.

Slow is not even the word for it. Id rather have my finger nails pulled out, than sit at a computer with snail-up.

True story:

I went to a friends house last year, hung out, smoked some cigars, drank a few beers, watched a movie...I have a habit of checking the [H] even when I'm not "working" so I ask dude, to use his net connection.

*silence*

You know, your computer so I can check my site.

*confused look*

You don't have a computer?

*no*

You don't have internet access?

*no*

and this is where it gets funny....no shit....I start to feel light headed. I had to sit down for a second. It got so bad, I had to go home. About 20 minutes after I was home, I felt better.

I'm not sure if it was the beer...or the lack of computers / internet access that did it to me but, just to be safe, I won't go to someone's house if they don't have the intarweb.

When my parents want me to come visit them for more than a day or 2 I feel like I'll be disconnected from the whole world.
They're on a dialup on a very slow, old computer, tiny CRT monitor, etc.

They can't get broadband where they live (out in the sticks), or cable for that matter, and they got rid of the satellite ("Didn't need it anymore..." ?!?!!!)

I don't know how they do it.

You just need to show your friend how to get free porn off the net. That'd get them interested.

I know people that are seriously technologically challenged and are scared to death of computers. The others I would imagine would be the very old, the very poor or the very ignorant of what a computer with internet capability is capable of. Sadly, their loss.
