No Options to Overclock Memory?

Good morning [H]-citizens.

I've been recently tinkering with the idea of overclocking my processor (see signature for spec), but I seem to be stuck. I read the stickies on overclocking in general and overclocking an AMD CPU, but my questions are not answered there.

I was able to determine my memory's maximum speed (225MHZ stable) using nvidia's Ntune software, but I am unable to change the memory's clock frequency from the BIOS. So, I have two questions:

1). Is there anyone here with any experience with this motherboard that can confirm whether or not it is possible to overclock the RAM?

2). If not, does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives. i.e., but faster ram, use FSB:RAM ratios (still not totally sure how those work), etc.

Thanks

or check my sig for a more explicit memory oc guide :D

the memory ratios basically work by changing the speed at which the ram works at in relation to the cpu. since the memory controller is on die, and runs at cpu speed, there is a divider that sets the ram speed from the memory speed.. usually seen as something like cpu/12.. if you have a cpu running at 2800mhz, cpu/12 will give you 2800mhz / 12 = 233.33mhz for the ram

the way you calculate the memory divider from the ratio is relatively straightforward:

cpu multi / memory ratio, rounded up.

so if i'm using a cpu with a 9x multiplier, and have the htt at 311mhz for 2800mhz...

setting the memory ratio to 200mhz (1:1) would give cpu/9:
9 / (1/1) = 9
and the end result is ram at 311mhz (2800/9)

but changing the ratio to 166mhz (5:6) give:
9 / (5/6) = 10.8 -> 11
cpu/11 -> 2800/11 = 254.54mhz

hope that helps some :D

Thanks guys. It is obvious to me now that I was very confused about how the memory was supposed to overclock at all, but now I think I understand it. I'll try following EclipseOC's guide once I get home from work today and post again with successful results or horribly sad tales of failure. :D

Ok, it's been a while, and I'm trying this whole overclocking thing again. I found my max HTT/FSB to be 320MHz using the method in Eclipse's guide:

Went into the bios, set CPU to 5x, set ram ratio to 100MHz, and set HTT ratio to 600MHz. Eclipse's guide says to set the HTT to 3x or so, but there is no such option in my bios, but 600MHz seems right to me, since 1x would be 200MHz.

Booting with these settings, I started the prime95 "in-place fft" test. I raised my FSB in 3MHz increments every 20 seconds until my computer restarted (prime95 never gave an error, just the restart). The restart occured at 327 MHz.

Then, I went into the bios and set the CPU mulitplier to 11x, and left the ram ratio at 100, and HTT at 600. I booted with these settings and ran prime95's "small fft" test, raising my FSB in 3MHz increments every 30 seconds. I got an error at 212MHz.

So, am I hosed on overclocking? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Any advice will be extremely appreciated.

Here's a screenshot after ~5 minutes with the FSB at 209. Temps are at 55C load.

what component had an error at 212mhz? memory? if so, use lower divider. or increase volt slowly by 0.05v increments.

The divider is already at 100MHz, the lowest my bios has to offer. After increasing from 1.4V to 1.45V, I get 215FSB stable.

*EDIT* Well shit. Immediately after posting this, prime95 gave me "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4". Should I try bumping the voltage up another .025?

*EDIT2* Whoops, accidentally typed my voltages as 4.1 and 4.15 :eek:
