I'm not sure whether this belongs more in this forum or the motherboard forum so sorry if this isn't in the right place.
I just moved back into college last week, and I shipped my comp via UPS. When I got it and brought it back to the dorm everything was fine; one of the cold cathode tubes was out of place but that was the worst the pc suffered in shipping. Everything seemed to work fine; Homeworld 2 (an OpenGL game) worked fine for me. However when I started up Battlefield 1942 (a D3D game) I noticed I was getting a lot of artifacting. My 9800Pro wasn't overclocked at all so I had no idea what was wrong. I quit BF and ran ATITool and scanned for artifacts and encountered none. However the artifacting in various D3D games persisted. I have a Thermaltake Extreme Giant 3 dual heatpipe cooler on my 9800 so I guessed that maybe it had loosened and the card was overheating some. I shut it off and pulled out the card, and sure enough, the heatsink was sliding around some on it. It still made contact with the core but it was not very tight and so that might explain why it was fine on the desktop but not in intensive D3D games (though no clue as to why Homeworld 2 and Lightwave, also OpenGL, worked fine.) I took off part of the heatsink and tightened the screws so it was on more securely this time. I plugged the card back in, but when I started up, I got the long-short-short beep, meaning something was wrong with my AGP card. I took it out and noticed I had accidentally smeared a little Arctic Silver 5 on the copper AGP contacts. I wiped it off with a Kleenex and some isopropyl alcohol. I plugged it back in and still no joy. I tried reseating it a few times but no luck. After about a dozen reseats and restarts with no change I gave up and went to bed. This morning I decided to give it another shot, still no joy. I took off the heatsink completely this, checked for any damage to the card or core (there was none) and then put the heatsink back on securely again. Now when I put the card in, I don't get any POST beep at all, indicating a dead board. However, if I boot up the pc without the card inserted, it gives me the long-short-short AGP beep. I'm running an NF7-S v2 and have never had any problems like this before. I don't know what is wrong here at all anymore. I thought maybe the AGP slot was dirty so I cleaned it with q-tips and isopropyl (as per the suggestion of someone on Futuremark's forums) but that didn't fix anything. I've also tried changing the molex. I'm considering picking up a Radeon 7000 for about $30 just to see if the 9800 is the problem (sure hope not
