No Fan on NB

Yesterday I looked down at my computer and noticed the fan on the northbridge on my motherboard wasn't spinning. I took it off and examined it and found it was cracked, tried unsuccessfully to fix it.

My motherboard is a Abit IC7-G. I am not overclocking.

Can i run with just passive cooling on the northbridge until i can replace the fan? Also, in order to get off the fan i had to remove the heatsink. When i put it back on i suppose the stock thermal pad isn't making as good of contact as before, probably not a problem usually but if i'm running without a fan on the heatsink will it be a problem. Unfortunately i dont have any thermal compound.

The side fan on my case seems to blow almost right on the heatsink, but its a good distance away, still I suppose it would help. I dont want to harm my motherboard, is it safe to run until i can replace the fan?

Also, assuming it is ok to just use passive, should I stop things like Folding@home until i get a fan for it, or does that not matter.
 
If you are talking about the stock heatsink, NOT the orb style, the original small heatsink, you'd best not run any type of stressing program. You'll fry the NB.
 
its the type that comes on the newer IC7's, not the little short one, the one with the bigger heatsink with a fan that says Abit.

I think I have the orb...the bigger newer one.
What did you mean by NOT the orb?
 
Abit made a new revision of the motherboard that had the blue orb style HSF on the NB. The older version had a thin small HSF that was very loud and died quickly. It sounds like you do have the newer version, which looks like this.

If you do, you're safe. You can run apps that stress the system because the heatsink on the NB is more than enough to cool it, providing your CPU fan lets air flow around it.
 
Anyone know of a good NB fan to replace the stock fan? (the newer version)? Mine is the loudest thing in my system right now, and rather annoying.
 
mine died on me too, and the heatsink is small, but I stuck my slot cooler under it instead of my gfx card and it's running with great temps.

I guess i'm going to end up having to replace the NB fan on my new Gigabyte board. Its already starting to sound like someone is holding a piece of paper against the fan. I would like to get the swiftech cooler since i'm probably going to use a swiftech CPU sink but $39 is crazy for just a NB cooler.
 
When NBs starting having fans, and I saw the crap they were using I knew this was going to start happening. Hmm, probably time to look at mine as well, last time it was just a bit dusty and needs a good spray of air.

As far as Folding specifically, it stresses the CPU itself and won't have a great effect on the NB temps.
