So I'm getting an Antec P180 in a few days.

Just curious, does an Maxtor DM10 16mb cache 250gig drive need an active fan blow on it? My intention was to put it in the lower chamber of the case, so there will be no fans blowing on it? Thoughts? Will it get too hot?

I also have a raptor 74gb drive, but its going to be housed and hopefully silenced in a coolermaster drive 6.
 
You should fine. Most hard drives only develop heat problems and cooling requirements with three or more "stacked." A single drive should remain well within operation tolerances by simply radiating heat into the surrounding air. However, the closer to ambient is of course better for longevity.
 
yea, 1 drive doesnt get hot unless something is wrong with it like mine 50C :eek: whats a good temp HD's should stay under

 
I think it is ok w/o fan. Or lots of people's hd will be dead now. Or worst every computer player's house are on fire right now. 911 will be bery busy. ^_^

Upper limit: 55C. Highest I would allow: 50C Goal in cooling system design: <40C.
 
I wouldn't feel too comfortable with 50c but I doubt it's going to cause any problems.

Just noticed your sig DougLite... Damn! Are you running media servers or something? 2.8T is just scary! I guess you don't clean out your old pr0n! ;)
 
~50C will probably shorten the life of the disk somewhat, like I said 50C is the upper limit. Most disks are rated to a maximum temperature of 55C, any higher than that is risking immediate failure. Ideally, hard drives should be kept below 40C, and it is pretty easy to do with 120mm fans and still keep the cooling quiet.

As for my sig, I need to update it. If you follow FS/T, you may have noticed that I have been fire-selling my ATA drives to help save up for a K8 system. I will get right on that, recalculating it takes a few minutes :D

EDIT: It's now 2,922GB. I have sold a 200GB, 2x160GB, 2x120GB, an 80GB, and a 40GB. Their departure has been offset by three newly arrived 300GB Seagate drives :D It will dip again, as the new 300GB drives will be replacing three 160GB drives, but by then I should be able to move on acquiring a WD2500KS and a Hitachi T7K250, so it should hover around 3TB for the forseeable future.

Check my sig. Those drives are right on top of each other and have been fine for the past year running several months straight at times 24/7. Those 74gig raptors don't get as hot as some of the older 7200rpm drives did. I have fans but not really for the drives.

The bottom line is your raptor will be fine as long as there is some space around it.

Yeah, I read that they've drastically improved the performance, noise and heat levels from the 1st gen raptor.

I have a P180 as well and have two 74G Raptors and a 320G Caviar down there. If you put your HD in the lower chamber, you don't have to worry much. The way it's designed, the PSU will pull air from the the front intake, in process cooling the HD's you install down there. Of course, you gotta make sure there's no air leaks between the bottom and top chambers. Plus, by default, there's a fan installed in the middle of the bottom chamber for that purpose. I removed it because of clutter... but you could keep it, or install a thinner fan if the cables get in the way
