I guess the old motto “membership has its privileges” is true for folks that have extended warranty programs through their credit cards. Knowing what benefits your credit card company offers is extremely helpful in these types of situations.

David was able to get the full cost of his computer refunded to him without paying for an extended warranty. He also had an excellent experience dealing with American Express, in clear contrast with his experience with both Best Buy's Geek Squad and Compaq.

That exact situation that happened to me. my laptop died like one week after the warrenty expired. So I went to the credit card company (Citiback American Airlines Mastercard i believe) who said that they automatically double the manufacturers warrenty. It took a while but in the end after getting all th paperwork together they reimbursed me for the full purchasing cost of the laptop so i could use it to buy another laptop.

Just ake sure when you make a major purchase like that do the following:
See if your credit card company does that option in the first place

Then when you purchase a major item do the following:
1) Keep the original reciept from the purchase
2) Keep the credit crd statement that shows that purchase
3) Keep the items warrenty on file as well
4) Be prepared to get an estimate on how muc it would cost to repair said item. The company will use that information to determine how much you get back.
5) Be aware that most ocmpanies will probably have a timeline on how quickly you get back to them after filing a claim (You open a claim and then they say ok you can pursue it get us all the above listed items) They typically have an expiration date after a claim is open.
6) Be prepared that it may take a while to process depending if they need more information. It took me from April all the way until September to get my money.

I see this benefit fading away just like costcos return policies :(

Heh, what if you buy something with your credit card but most of it was paid for by gift cards? :D

Well, I know this works with Visa (at least with mine), in that when I bought my laptop.
I only had to buy the one year warranty and Visa would pay for the repairs that were under warranty for the second year if there were problems.

~Now here is the catch, the company has to be a US store, so if I were to buy an electronic X
(fill in X with some part) in Russia then they would not cover it.

The card company will not lose this until they see themselves losing money in the investment. Which I would say is very few right now, but will increase over the next years as more people own computers/etc.

wow I only use amex now. After it took them one day to completely refund my money for a busted laptop. It was easily the most pleasurable experience I've dealt with. Too bad Fry's doesn't take Amex, because they are usually the most miserable to deal with.

Yeah being a student, it is quite nice to know that my electronics get a little more life expectancy. But be advised, often Visa or MC will only reimburse you if the entire purchase was on the card.

Split Bills don't count afaik

This is very true,up north in Canada.I had Scotia Bank Visa reimburse my wife and I for a 30" Smasung LCD wall tv with a dvd built in to it,that died outside of the warranty,by 2 months.

They told us when we made the claim, that if we had paid even 5 $ of it using a gift card @ BB or cash,we would have seen not a penny in coverage ! It was 1099.00...
