No Easter Logo at Google Again

I don't disagree... The problem is that there really is no solution to this. It takes tolerance, and that simply does not exist today.

No, they really shouldn't. That's how we got Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings instead of Merry Christmas. I'm not religious, and I even prefer Merry Christmas. Universal anything just means you made it so vanilla that it doesn't even bother to stand out anymore.

My first dissenter. Cool LOL

Couldn't disagree more. Having each unique is a better way to celebrate them. Aside from that you would have the same argument. I don't drink, and I don't watch "ball games." So there's no correlation how I "celebrate."

Google didn't celebrate Easter? Whoop-dee-doo.

No matter what you do, someone's going to have a fit. You can't win.

QFT!

So what. Their website, their rules. People get upset about everything dont they? :p
Same mentality should be applied to private schools, and yet an all male military school was forced to go co-ed. More than likely same people saying Christians should get over are the same ones telling the military to do whatever the liberal agenda wants.

Google can do what they want. No one should dictate otherwise.

Imagine, hypothetically, the hate and outrage if they had "traditional marriage day" and not "gay marriage day."

Now THAT is a good idea....which, of course, Traditional Marriage Day would be the other 364 days in a year, and Gay Day would be coincidentally and inconveniently the 1 day that Google just happens to be down for service, so no one actually sees a Gay Day Google logo.

I'm with you on this. Look people, you do not have a right to be not offended.

you must be new here (here meaning the planet earth)

Hey now, I apologize for the loudest "Christians" that tend to be jerks (it is usually the complainers that get heard above everyone else). Not all of us are like that, and some that are, are not exactly genuine. Some people just started out like that, and then they put a belief system on top of it without really changing.

They should just come up with a universal "Holiday Symbol" that everyone can use. That way no one gets pissed off.

It can be a picture of a guy stretched out in the Recliner, holding a Beer, and watching a ball game.

There. Whenever any holiday of any type comes around, just put that up. Done!

I'm totally stealing your idea.

It is kind of inconsistent of them. If you're going to celebrate the immaculate conception myth then you should probably celebrate the miraculous resurrection myth too.

I'm so going to Hell.....

:)

Not too familiar with the history of Easter, are you?

What does my being familiar with the history of Easter have to do with the statement that in this day and age it is more intimately associated, compared to the other usurped pagan holiday's, with the Christian church.

Trying to look smart and you just look dumb.

Which school was that? Did it receive any non-private state or federal funding? If so, there's your answer.

I think they should put up pictures for Ramadan. For the whole freaking month. Yeah, that will teach those whiney 'my religiong is the most important' people.

Who cares? Easter is a fail holiday anyway, as it was stolen from the Pagans...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ēostre

The real "Easter" is on the Spring Equinox, and doesn't have anything to do with the Christian religion. Easter is nothing more than a stolen holiday. Ostara is the real holiday.

i think that people should stop caring about what google set their logo as for some holiday. I personally am atheist/raised Roman Catholic and I think that most of that stuff is soooooo trivial compared to real problems. If people focused all that wasted energy that they put into trival BS like this stuff then we could maybe solve a REAL problem for once. Personally i dont even look at the logo cause I use a search bar in Chromium/Chrome

oh yea....MOST of Christian things are stolen from paganism because it would make it easier for the people at the time to switch. (also architecture!). I did a lot of research years ago when I challenged my parents in my stance as atheist (they are HARDCORE Roman Catholic). I think it is ridiculous.

Seriously not to start problems on the forum but I think pagan ideas make a bit more sense (respect/worship nature because thats what made YOU!)

i had a feeling that my statement would be taken in either extreme.....eh who cares.

You had to say it. :p ;)

Nature has always existed.

Even before the universe banged into existence? The problem is that nature undergoes constant change. Every change requires a prior cause. If the universe always existed, we would have an infinite regress of cause/effects. There is life because the earth is warm, because the sun heats it, because the sun is hot, because of fusion reactions, because of .... because of a big bang of the universe, because of x, y, z... With an infinite regress there could never be a first cause. It would be like an infinite regress of train boxcars traveling without an engine to push them. We would have a situation where one might ask, "What pushed boxcar A?" "It was boxcar B." "What pushed boxcar B?" "C." "What pushed C?" "D." etc... "Is there a first pusher?" "no." There would be some sort of quasi 'time' before the universe began and it would be an infinite sequence of changes. And if we did have an infinite sequence of events, we would also be "adding" to infinity since each new effect adds to the previous "infinity".

Much easier to say that nature is finite. And the only way to have a first cause would be to have an uncaused being that does not undergo change and does not undergo time (nor a sequence of events).

I'm sorry, I really should stay out of this, but I just have a couple of comments.

First: Yes,you are right, some holidays were originally pagan holidays that were taken over and completely changed by the Catholic church. (although I would not be caught dead citing wikipedia as a legit source).

Secondly: I do not mean to offend, but you should distinguish between the Roman Catholic church, and Christianity. There is a rather large difference. The Roman Catholic church is the religion that adopted many pagan ideas, Christianity has since been reformed to what it was supposed to be (and I realize you are an atheist now so you probably would not believe me if I pointed to some evidence to back that up, but I had to distinguish between the two).

Thirdly, just to reinterate: I still think people make far too big of a deal of Google not celebrating Easter, it is up to them, and they do not want to, then they have every right not to.

People will always find a reason to bitch, trust me
Your post pissed me off. Now I'm really upset!!

:p :D

About Google ... eh. Sometimes their logo mods are cool and sometimes they're lame, but I care more about the contents of what I'm searching for. ;)

I said the same thing about Best Buy and its stupid holiday crap too:

If you are going to do the holiday logo stuff...DO IT FOR EVERYONE

If you can't....DON'T DO IT AT ALL.

Solves all the problems right there. Am I right?

As a Christian, Easter has struck me as a strange anomaly. It is celebrated by different church denominations at different times, and it seems to be quite arbitrary. Google not doing anything for it to me seems more accurate than trying to celebrate any one day. I would bet that someone in Legal got a complaint that it was the wrong day, and after some discussion about not celebrating it 2-3 times a year, they just dropped it.

Based on the explicit use in all four Gospels as celebrating the Jewish remembrance of Passover, why is it so hard to figure out when Good Friday is and Resurrection Sunday is?
Personally, I would like to just return to using the Jewish calendar, putting Easter the Sunday after Passover observance, and be done with this 1700 year old discussion.

But back on topic, Google can do as they please.

Thanks,
-Steven

Who cares? Religion should have no public influence in any way. Keep your beliefs in imaginary people to yourselves.

They'll still get pissed off. Hell, some people complained when stores started saying "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas".

Hah, what's wrong with not having an Easter logo? It's a pagan holiday anyway..

It's turtles all the way down, smart guy.

Just a thought for those 'it's a pagan holiday' people...most major religions are based on something prior and evolve over time to incorporate new things. Religions that pop up from nothing are usually not very mainstream (obviously, because they haven't done anything to shape society or history) and can be quite silly (Scientology :p)

So, talking about 'Easter is really the Spring equinox/spring renewal/end of winter' and trying to pin it on one specific belief because of its name is nice and all but a little pedantic. The Greeks had Persephone well before then, pretty much all cultures have something similar because the spring renewal was an event both common important to all ancient cultures.

Well, we live in a free country, and in this country it is fine and dandy for you to have faith in that belief without offering rationale nor a defense of that belief. ;)

Please research the difference between "The Universe" as scientists mean it and "The Universe" as the dictionary would define it. There is, in-fact, a difference, and it would appear that you do not understand it.

As well, your belief is based on what is "easier" by your own admission. Mine is based on what is most logical based on the knowledge available to me.

By all means, continue doing only what is easiest.

The definition of universe varies depending upon your system beliefs. Even amongst scientists. But that isn't important to the problem. I'm talking the raw "materials" of this universe that would/would not exist prior to the advent of the universe as we now know it (whatever that may be: energy, other forces, 'matter').

Don't confuse my usage of the word: "easier." It's "easier" to believe in what you think is most logical. Some people think Islam is the most logical system of beliefs. Some people can articulate why they think their belief is the most logical. Others have faith that their favorite intellectual/leader can explain it well enough and accurately.
