System is i7 920, EVGA x58 LE motherboard, 2x EVGA GTX 285s in SLI. Have both monitors connected to 2nd card.

System boots fine but I noticed that when I have the displays installed on the 2nd card they stay in powersave mode until windows 7 loads.

SLI is working fine. Using driver 196.21.

When I have both monitors connected to the 1st card, I get the post screens no problem.

Why would it be like this?

well before the window, the driver did not kick in yet, that is why only main VGA will be function

you think thats bad. I've got an evga X58 SLI and I don't get anything at all until the windows loading screen, no post screen, nothing. only way I know way I know waht it's doing is the digital code on the board and the sounds the computer is making.

bit more info

the first card is the boot card for BIOS display out the second card will get No video out until drivers have taken control of the both video cards
windows then detects that the 2 outputs have something plugged into the second card so it use them and disconnect the 1st cards outputs unless there is monitors plugged into them

why would you connect your monitors to the second card any way unless you had 4 monitors, as you lose the ability to use the BIOS or use boot cd options (installing windows)

@Soggy
some video cards output is only on 1 output ATI uses both outputs on boot i think Nvidia only outputs to DVI port 1 (you have 2 DVI ports move the cable over to the other port or card) is it 2x EVGA GTX 260 that your are using ?, when the pc is turned on keep pressing DEL or F2 (most its DEL to get to the bios) or disconnect your HDD so windows does not boot, then move the cables around the DVI cable should be in the Top card in DVI 1 port untill you get display output

most Nvidia DVI ports are numbered 1 and 2 some times as well the second card is what got picked as the First card (u had that happen on my 9800GX2 as the Blue Light on it to show you witch card is the first card)

yeah, the first card is what gets initialized by the BIOS. the second card is fully controlled by the windows display drivers. plug your monitors into your first card if it bothers you not seeing anything on bootup.
