The IBM Serveraid 8i (Adaptec OEM) has no ports is it possible to use a HBA in conjunction with this? :confused:
 
I'm guessing it's a ZCR (Zero-channel RAID) card. Unfortuntately, you can only use this with onboard SCSI solutions on compatable motherboards. They've got a special designated slot and everything
 
Possibly, but what are you trying to achieve by doing it in two parts? Buying a single card with ports on it and a hardware raid solution is probably cheaper, and you won't be able to upgrade one half at a time or anything.

What's your goal in buying a HBA? Making arrays? How many disks, and what kind?

I made a stupid move mostly my part as I searched google there was hardly any information on the Serveraid 8i ( I was going through search results for days!) I don't wanna have to pay a restocking fee and the SO-DIMM Taro card looks very promising as it's the same adaptec chipset. I'd also make out better as I think the card is supposed to sell for $150-200
from what I've heard.

Right now I only have 3 36GB SAS 15K RPM's (got at a very good price :) ), 2 SATA Raptors, 2 SATA 300GB, 2 Plex's 716 the sata kind. And next month I'll be buyin an expander for you guessed it more drives :D
 
Well, I don't see anywhere to plug the so-dimm card into that on the best pic I've found. Have you got the actual card? If so, please post pics of it, front and back, so we can make sure it'll physically work with it. You may be best off buying a motherboard with a lot of sata ports and ZCR capability, like this, although that'll obviously limit your overclocking - it's a server board. Also, possibly of interest is IBM's page about raid; there's a link to the pdf about it.

I think if you want to use this card and overclock your system you may be out of luck. :(

 
Okay, but I think getting that would replace the card you've already got. Have you tried it? I don't know if the sata ports on that board will magically start working as SAS, but it could happen. Plug it in and fire it up. I don't think sata controllers can damage sas drives or vice versa, but you might want to wait for UICompE02 to stop by (maybe PM him to get his attention?) and confirm that before you go possibly breaking things. I imagine he'll have a better answer on what this card is and what to do with it.

The concept of ZCR is the mobo makers make a board with just plain ol' ports on it - no raid - and then if you want to you go out and get a card for it that makes them do raid. They can be either sodimm sized things (like the tyan) or pci cards (like the ibm).

 
No no the TARO is just a ZCR compatible SAS adapter with just ports on it.
 
I think that means it supports raid 0 and 1 between the on-motherboard ports and the on-chip ones. I could be wrong, though.

 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but ZCR doesn't work in-between PCI cards
I don't even think i'm understanding your whole setup here :confused:
 
The Taro card is a proprietary (sp?) mobo upgrade almost like it has always existed there. I think its a way so Tyan can save $$$ and add convience build all the same mobos and if someone wants onboard SCSI or something they can just add a Taro card.
