I just ordered my case and I haven't received it yet. I want to test my parts if everything is working and nothing is dead or needs to be RMA.

now my question is, where is the safest way to place motherboard and set up the parts to test everything? thanks

I've always placed the motherboard and HDD on cardboard, plugged in all components and shorted the power switch jumpers to boot it. I've read that the anti-static bag the board ships in can be conductive, so I've avoided placing the mobo on that.

yeah... I've just put the mother board on top of it's box... don't put it on the bag cause the outside of the bag ain't antistatic.

if you motherboard has onboard pwr / rst switches (some have little microswitches) great otherwise i just use a little flat screw driver to sort power pins momentarily.

ill use the mobo box then. another question: can I install my os during the external build? plug in everything while outside the case then install os.

yeah... it is fine

my buddy had a pc basically that was a mb / hd tacked to a wall for awhile.

the only thing would be make sure stuff is stable (won't get bumped knocked over) and especially if installing to a mechanical disk make sure it doesn't get bumped

Ok thanks. Ill be using ssd for my os.

If you're installing expansion cards, be careful not to touch or jolt them when it's running since they're rather wobbly not screwed to a case (ideally, plug things in when the computer's off). You can easily cause a BSOD if the card wiggles a lot.

Got rid of my case and made a tech bench and now computer is easy to work on and temps dropped about 10 degrees c.
