alright here's the deal...my friend's computer was running hot so he opened up the case and rearranged the wires and removed a cd drive from the case...when he went to boot the bios post but then nothing but a black screen...he made sure to ground himself although he didn't use any sort of wrist band and he changed the bios to not read the cd drive...so we're not sure whats going on....any ideas????
 
Try resetting the CMOS. Also try reseating the power cables on the motherboard.
 
Yeah, listen for beeps. Also try taking out the memory to see if anything changes.
 
alright, this is actually my computer. Thanks to maverick for helping me out there. ne ways i tried reseating the power for everything and I tested all my IDE cables. It beeps on startup, but it has always done that. I have tried to boot from a cdrom and my windows cd but that didnt work. Power is getting to my Main board because my video card works and I can see my logo screen. but after that it gives me a black screen. the video card is getting info but it is not displaying anything.

I am not sure what CMOS is but if someone could elaborate I would try it.

yah i can get into the BIOS but nothing I do helps. I already tried reseting factory defaults
 
have you tried setting hdd as first boot device? on my older comp it wont boot windows any other way.
 
Try hitting F8 at the post screen and see if you can get the advanced boot menu. Try "last known good" from there.
 
I had the HDD set as the primary but when that didn't work i set the IDE as primary. I'll see about the advanced start next. Thanks

sorry forgot about that. Its a maxtor 120 IDE, Asus m something motherboard with a OLD AMD Athilon XP 2500+ 1.86Ghz, stock fan/heatsink, NEC CD-RW, and a DVD rom. basic 400w PSU thats 5 years old and a gamers case with 6 fans, I think its a PNY GeForce 5200 128 Mb AGP.

booting to cd and/or HDD didn't work w/ F8
 
Disconect all your drives.
It should then come up OS not found on the screen.

Or just disconnect the HDD. But without any spare parts, ie vid card, to swap out..... I would take everything out of the case, set it on top of the mobo box (if you have it) or a table or something. Connect everything up and see what happens. You follow?
 
yeah i follow, i am buying a new hdd as we speak so if the worst happens I can replace it. ill try it and get back to you
 
also try running system restore from the recovery console off the xp cd.. this usually works.. plus you will know if your hard drive bit the dust this way as well.. here are teh super easy steps.

1. cd \
2. cd system~1
If you don't get an Access Denied error
cd windows
cd system32
cd config
ren system system.bak
exit

other wise continue...

3. cd _resto~1
4. dir
5. cd rp250
Usually the larget RPXXX file is the most recent..
you should see the dates you should not need to go back any more than 2 days or so.
6. cd snapshot
7. copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software

usually those 2 are more than enough.. but if you want you can do the other 3.

copy _registry_machine_security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy _registry_machine_sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy _registry_user_.default c:\windows\system32\config\default

also if your video card has 2 outputs available.. try connecting the monitor to the second one.. i have seen the video card jump back to the default output and show a BSOD only on that screen.. usually this means your video card bit the dust. But the system restore should get you up and running.

I have already tried to boot to the cd and it wont let me. It tells me that there are no supported drives found and thats the end of that. Also i am only running on the stock VGA cable not a DVI. so.... still havent tried the others yet but im getting to it
 
Download and burn the Ultimate Boot CD
It has most, if not all, the hard drive testing software.
Memtest, Prime, Etc, Etc.
Its a very good CD to have when testing hardware
 
I'm downloading the boot cd now. Although its not looking to good. Just took everything out and put just the ram, mobo, video card, and HDD in.... still did the same thing.
 
ok so i downloaded the win boot cd and it gave me about 7 or so viruses. so thats not gonna happen anymore. anyone got any other ideas??
 
Disconnect everything. Take it out of the case. Hookup the vid card, power supply and make sure the ram is in there, (cpu too obv). boot it up outside the case on a mobo box or table or something. make sure you're not standing on a rug, lol. I always do this first when building a machine to test the basic hardware.
