I know the Wii can connect to the internet wirelessly.

But I don't have a wireless router.. Mine is wired

Is there any functionality with the Nintendo DS USB wireless thingy?

Yes.
The DS doogle doubles as a wireless access point.

Nintendo confirmed this back at e3. (Not that they needed to. It works anyway, its part of the technology.)

Why not just buy a wireless router? Should be about the same price.
