How does the Switch determine what's on the end of an audio cable? I have a set of Bluetooth headphones that work great when connected with an audio cable. If I disconnect my headphones and plug in my JBL Flip speaker, there's no sound. I read that this works when docked only, but that's the only time I wouldn't use a speaker since the dock is connected via HDMI.

Might there be a way to fool the system into thinking my speaker is a pair of headphones?

I don't own a Switch but that doesn't make any sense. If the JBL Flip has a simple AUX-input, it shouldn't matter at all what is feeding the audio source since it's basically a pair of headphones at that point.

I would try using the speaker with a different audio cable if you have one.

I've tried three good cables. Headphones work wth all three. No sound to the speaker. Any other device will send audio to whatever's connected to it. Doesn't make sense.
 
Check the pin-out on the switch outlet vs your JBL flip, then verify the pinout on your wire. perhaps they are using a ground and switching one of the audio channels. Apple does this so when you try and use their headphones on other devices it sometimes will not work, and you have to halfway's pull the jack out of the receptacle to get them to play in both ears.
 
I finally got it to work after plugging and unplugging a few times in succession. Not sure why it took that, but I'm not complaining. Well, I do feel that the volume level is pretty lackluster, even with the Flip at max. It's at a comfortable level. I do enjoy loud on occasion though. : )
