Nintendo DS Lite

Hey steviep what happened to you and others arguing that "before Thanksgiving" didn't mean the day before Thanksgiving?

How bout you stop trying to incite a flamefest? Do you have anything constructive to contribute to this thread? I wasn't arguing anything. Currently, the only semi-confirmation of the Revolution date is an interview with a third party controller maker that said "thanksgiving", which is almost the same as what Iwata-san said ("before thanksgiving") - I'll take the latest date possible for $100, Bob. Nintendo always waits till the last minute, and if you remember your history at all, when did the groundbreaking NES release? There are a lot of assumptions and very educated guesses I'm pouring into the statement that I made. So if you would like to create a thread to argue about the release date of the Revolution, feel free. /end off-topic

There will be no analog nub on the DS because that would be SEGMENTING the DS installed user base. That can't be done, and won't be done. The touch screen is more "analog" than an analog stick, though, so I would suggest getting used to true analog control. As for the web browser, if you're to believe Reggie, it's officially in the works. Unofficially, I think it may already be done if you've got a flashed DS with Linux on it.

Steviep i just want you to admit that yes the ds is better for controlling in games fps and tigerwoods etc BUT not in racing games, platformers and third person games like tombraider and prince of persia. i tried ridge racer with the stylus and it sucked. The touchscreen is not "better Full Stop" for analogue control, ie some people have to have the ds on the floor for some toucscreen games because they find it difficult holding the ds with there left hand trying to bash the shoulder button or dpad with their left hands fingers whilst using the stylus with their right. I like the look of the ds ite though, and am considering getting one if they do a black glossy look. so out of this list which would you say touch screen would be better than an analogue stick:
Metriod hunters
Tigerwoods 06
puzzle games like mercury
fifa 06
tonyhawks underground
madden 06
nba06
nhl 06
ssx
any 2d/3d fighting game like tekken or street fighter
prince of persia
tombraider
burnout
virtua tennis
smackdown
ridgeracer
mario 64/ds
pacman world 3
GTA

out of thosei reckon for the ds i can only see one in the sports genre where stylus would be better
Fps games, yes (but some have difficulty and have to have ds on the floor)
3d platformers with a stylus, u gotta be kidding, only ones made specifically for touch screen would be good.
were sick of you stating that true stylus control is far better for every single type of game out there.
Dont shy away either

I don't see how you'd have trouble with the NDS on a FPS game, it seems pretty easy to me.

I've played the Demo, and it took some getting used to as its like using a mouse for the first time.

edit: I think the touch screen is something you either like or don't.

i think people find the ds design difficult to hold for long periods of time whereas a palm pilot is dead easy becuse they are designed for use with one hand

Yeah, it's really hard to hold the thing up in one hand and use the stylus with the other. I was hoping that the redesign would address this specifically, but if the new one weighs significantly less it will still help. I myself am neutral about the touch screen, as it depends on the game. I hate trying to use it on animal crossing, unless I'm moving large amounts of items. But it's impossible to play Meteos with the face buttons. Kirby was a lot of fun though, and it's nice to have the option on advance wars. I also wish they wouldn't try to force it in so much, like in Castlevania. The seal system did contribute somewhat to gameplay because it limited where you could go, but it sucked having to have the stylus at the ready during every boss fight. I wish they had put an analog stick on the thing from the get-go; maybe they felt it couldn't be done effectively.

Rash, I agree with you completely, in that the touch screen is NOT good for all genres, unless it's REALLY utilized well. I'm just saying, they're not going to segment the installed userbase... even if there IS room for an analog nub on it.

That said, 95%+ of games work just fine with what's available (either the d-pad or the touch screen). The few that do (3D platformers being an example), digital control isn't THAT bad. Slarti, I agree that the DS is a bit heavy for 1-handed use, but it's not bad either. The new one weighs 2/3's of the old one, I think, so that will address some of the issue.

For those of you having trouble using the stylus with FPS, give the wrist strap a try. It has a little plastic piece that goes under your thumb. I find it pretty easy to use.

I was thinking it was going to be a complete redesign.

Same here. This is more like the Gameboy > Gameboy Pocket update.

Any info on better (more reinforced)/brighter screens? The reason I have not wanted to get one yet was because it seems the touchscreen gets scratched/blemished too easily (at least the demo ones in the stores do), and I've heard that screen protectors lower the sensitivity. A more scratch-resistant touchscreen would be very welcome.

And although the models of the Revolution and it's controllers have been shown in that pearl white color, I think Nintendo also wants to copy Apple and the iPod to a certain extent.

The screen protectors don't lower the sensitivity in my experience, but they do blur the image a little bit.

Hey Jawadali, I have one. The screens are very durable, but I have screen protectors on mine anyway. They don't decrease the sensitivity at all, and I haven't noticed any blurring, I guess you just have to buy a nice one. You can't really go by store units cuz people abuse those...

Hey Screaming what brand do you use? I use the pelican ones, I actually don't like Nintendo's own protectors because I thought those actually did affect the sensitivity. They just felt weird.

I actually found some PDA ones on a clearance rack and cut them to size with a razor. They work great, I think they were fellows brand or something.

I have no interest in sony or any of their backwards steps in technology. I actually just got a play-yan for my my GBA Advance and it is awesome! I'm having a hell of a time trying to convert my itunes music to mp3 to get it on there though :(. CD rippings are going well though.

I don't think the control issue is so much with the touchscreen itself, as it is with the shape of the system. It's really really uncomfortable to hold a horizontal piece of equipment like that and use the touchpad at the same time, whether it be with the thumb nub or the stylus. The screen is in the middle of the device and you have to angle your hand funny or turn the thing sideways. Unless you have 6 inch thumbs heh. The stylus is easier, but still, the system is just not ergonomic AT ALL.

I'll get my grubby mits on a DSLite to test, as the smaller size may help, but it's still not ideal. If they could have oriented it more vertically, like a pda, that would have been nice.

Thanks for the linkage Rich, those look pretty good and are significantly cheaper than the Pelicans.

They work great Slarti, been using them since the start.

You will never worry about using your fingernail even with these puppies installed. Good quality, thick enough to do the job, but not so thick it distorts the screen.

And the best part is no adhesive residue left behind.

I highly suggest giving them a try.

IT works great for metroid hunters..

Do they come off alright? The nice thing about the pelican's is that they are just slighty undersized, so in only takes a moment to pry 'em off.

Yes you basically flex it in the middle and the edges slide right out from under the plastic.

Easy to install and uninstall once you are used to it.

So why did you not get the old one? Looks the same to me.....

The two look similar, but are far from identical. DS Lite is physically smaller; its speakers are placed higher; the d-pad is shorter on all sides; the top lid is now flat when closed, rather than curved; the stylus has a repositioned holder; the screen borders (particularly on top) have been thinned and color-blended into the unit; there's now an on/off switch instead of an on/off button; the start and select buttons are now rounded, and have been moved; the screens now have 4 levels of user-defined brightness; the battery LEDs and microphone have been moved; the Nintendo DS logo just below the bottom screen has been removed; the top screen's hinge has been redesigned completely; and the d-pad and ABXY buttons have been moved higher for easier thumb access (this is probably the most important change, given how the DS' d-pad murders my thumb due to its placement.)

Be a little more observant.

Stop it, you're making me want one, and I already have an original...

This looks like a nice re-design, though I've heard that the flaws of the first have carried over (Angular corners).

You're probably going to be pissed at the PSP v2 that will be announced at E3, then.

Hopefully it fixes the God-awful stiffness of the buttons. Instead of a stylus, you need a hammer and chisel.

 None of my buttons are stiff and I've never heard anyone that actually owns one complain about that before

that is the funiesy shit i've read all week LOL!!..

however, i don't know what you're talking about.. my buttons are nice.. i'm guessing you want something more like the Xbox360 buttons where they feel softer?

both ways are godo to me..

I think that ZX6 was referring to my comment about the PSP when he mentioned button stiffness... but I could be wrong.

Thank you for having common sense, steviep.

I quoted a comment on the supposed PSP redesign and commented on it. How anyone translated that as a bash of the DS is beyond me. You can't even consistantly do a shoryuken (Fireball) in Street Fighter 2 because of the stiffness of the directional buttons on the PSP.

That would seriously drive me mad. I would probably have a smashed handheld in no time. ;)

i heard capcom was releasing some sort of addon for the D pad of the PSP because of that?

and if yo're talking about me.. i was not quoting you as a DS bash... i didn't think you were bashing the DS
